1 day in Ajmer

Day 1: Dargah, lake and old city
Arrive early and walk to the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, ideally before 9 am to avoid the heaviest crowds. Spend 1–2 hours inside, removing your shoes at the entrance; women should cover their hair. Walk a few minutes away to visit Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra, the stark 12th-century mosque. Have lunch in the old city bazaar or at a family-run restaurant. In the late afternoon, walk the Ana Sagar Lake promenade on the main embankment for sunset, then explore the narrow lanes around the Dargah as they light up in the evening. End with a light dinner or chai stop near the Dargah.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Visit the Dargah early (before 9 am) to avoid crowds and the heat. Remove your shoes; use footwear-storage services and allow time.
- The Dargah and old-city bazaars have cobbled, uneven floors. Wear slip-on shoes and consider a walking stick for navigation.
- Hire a car and driver for Taragarh Fort and the Jain temples. Walking up from the base is steep; vehicles reduce the climb.
- The Ana Sagar Lake embankment is level and pleasant for evening walks; avoid the midday heat. Walk in early morning or late afternoon.
- Book a hotel with a lift and easy car access. Lake embankment hotels are generally easier than old-city lanes.
- Keep afternoons free for rest; the city is tiring even in winter. Plan gentle activities like museum visits or rest after lunch.
