Murud-Janjira was built by Ahmadnagar Sultanate rulers in the 16th century and became a major stronghold of the Siddis, African mercenaries and soldiers in Indian courts. The fort was so well-built that the Marathas, despite multiple sieges over decades, never captured it. It fell to the British only after a negotiated surrender in 1818.
The fort is remarkable for its engineering: multiple ramparts, bastions with interlocking fields of fire, and a fresh-water well that sustained the garrison in long sieges. It stands as a testament to maritime defence architecture and the complex power dynamics of the Konkan coast during the Mughal and post-Mughal era.

How to experience it
Drive from Alibaug early in the morning, reaching Murud by late morning. Park near the causeway and begin the walk to the island. The causeway is stone-paved and can be slippery, especially after rain. The walk takes 10–15 minutes and offers views of the Konkan coast.
Inside the fort, you walk through gateways into open courtyards ringed by barrack buildings, storage rooms and battery positions. The fort is well-preserved relative to others in the region, with intact bastions and cannons still visible. Climb to the upper ramparts if you have the energy; the views from the island back towards the coast and towards Kolaba are extensive.
Allot at least 1.5–2 hours inside. Bring water, as there is no shade or refreshment inside the fort itself. Return by late afternoon to reach Alibaug by sunset.
