The short answer
Chopta: what visitors should know first
Worth a day trip if you are in the area. The village itself is quiet and underdeveloped, but the landscape—open meadows with mountain views—is spectacular. The drive from Auli takes roughly 2–3 hours via Joshimath, and you can walk to nearby viewpoints or trek up to Tungnath temple in a day.

Why it matters
Why Chopta is worth your time
Chopta is on the edge of the pastoral, alpine Himalayan belt where trekking, grazing and pilgrimage intersect. The Tungnath temple and the trek to it have been pilgrimage routes for centuries. In recent decades, the trek and the meadows have become more touristically known, but Chopta remains quieter and less developed than famous hill stations.
The landscape is representative of the Himalayan transition zone between forest and alpine meadow, with rich biodiversity. The trek to Tungnath, especially in spring, is one of the more rewarding and accessible high-altitude pilgrimages in the region.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Drive from Joshimath to Chopta via the hill road (avoid during monsoon). The landscape becomes greener and cooler as you climb. Once in the village, explore the meadows on foot. The views extend to the snow line and into the valleys below. If you are hiking, the trail up to Tungnath temple departs from the village and takes 1.5–2 hours of steep but well-marked climbing.
Tungnath is a small temple dedicated to Shiva, standing at nearly 3,700 metres. It is the highest Shiva temple in the Indian Himalayas. Most visitors do the walk for the exercise and the views more than the temple itself. Return to Chopta for the night or drive back to Joshimath in the evening. Spring brings rhododendrons; autumn brings clear skies and butterflies.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Go early in the day; afternoon clouds often roll in from the valleys
- Wear layers; the temperature drops significantly as you climb
- Carry water; there are few shops or rest points on the Tungnath trail
- The road to Chopta is steep and can be slippery in rain; drive carefully
- Accommodation in Chopta is basic; most visitors overnight in Joshimath instead

Why is Chopta called Mini Switzerland?
The grassy, rolling meadows with mountain views reminded early tourists of Alpine landscapes. The nickname stuck, though Chopta is more sparse and pastoral.
Is Tungnath worth trekking to?
Yes, if you enjoy steep walks and views. The temple itself is small, but the high-altitude location (3,700m) and the panorama make the trek rewarding.
How steep is the Tungnath trek?
It is steep but steady, taking 1.5–2 hours up and the same down. Fit adults of any age can do it; older visitors should assess their fitness first.
When do the rhododendrons bloom?
Mid-April to early May. The peak blooms late April, when the hillsides are brilliant red and pink.
