Why it matters

Why Nandi Hills is worth your time

Nandi Hills, at about 1,500 metres, was a strategic lookout point in ancient and medieval times. The Nandi Temple at the summit is ancient, and the Nandi Fortress was built to guard the region. The hill is named for the Nandi Temple and the monoliths and carvings that honour the bull deity. It has long been a pilgrimage site and a retreat from the lowland heat.

For modern Bengaluru, it is a quick escape to cool air and open views. The hill is also a popular spot for paragliding, which has made it known to adventure enthusiasts. The ancient temples and the views over the surrounding plains keep it spiritually and scenically important.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Leave Bengaluru at 5–5.30 am to reach the top by sunrise. The drive on the single-lane mountain road is scenic but winding; a careful driver is essential. Arrive at the top as the sun breaks over the plains below; the view from the ridge is expansive and the light is golden. Stop at the viewpoint and watch the light change across the landscape.

Then visit the Nandi Temple, a small sacred shrine at the top, and walk the ridge path to see the paragliders who often launch from the hill. If time allows, explore the old royal palace and the Tipu Houdah (a throne or litter on display). The Yoga Narasimha temple is a short walk; the sculpture is impressive.

Breakfast or lunch at the small cafes on the hilltop is simple but welcoming. Spend 2–3 hours on the hill, then drive back to Bengaluru, reaching around midday. A faster visit means sunrise and a quick walk; a slower visit includes more temple time and lunch.

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • The road is winding and steep; allow 1.5 hours for the drive
  • Wear a light layer; mornings are cool at altitude
  • Bring water and light snacks; food options on the hill are simple
  • A guide is not necessary, but a knowledgeable driver helps explain the history
