The short answer
Best areas to stay in Bhubaneswar
- 01
Old city (near Lingaraj Temple)
Best for: Travellers who want temple access and heritage atmosphere
Close to the main temples and Bindu Sagar Lake, with heritage guesthouses and small hotels. Narrow lanes, traffic, and noise are trade-offs. Check for lifts and parking if travelling with elders.
- 02
Nayapalli and Satya Nagar
Best for: Central, quieter locations with restaurants and shops
Modern, tree-lined residential areas with good hotels, cafés and hospitals. About 10–15 minutes by car from the temples. A comfortable base for most travellers.
- 03
Biju Patnaik Marg (near airport)
Best for: Convenience if arriving late or leaving early
Busy commercial area with many chain hotels. Close to the airport but 20–30 minutes from the temples. Useful if your stay is very short.
- 04
Kharavela Nagar
Best for: Central, quieter residential area
Another pleasant, tree-lined neighbourhood with good mid-range hotels. Central to temples and museums, with local restaurants and markets.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Bhubaneswar
- Visit temples at opening time when courtyards are less crowded and the day is cooler. Lingaraj Temple in early morning is best.
- Carry water, a hat and sunscreen. Afternoons are very hot and humid from March to September; stay indoors during these hours if possible.
- The old city temples have uneven stone floors and occasional steps. Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry a stick if mobility is a concern. Brahmeswara and Ananta Vasudeva temples are more level than Lingaraj.
- The Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves involve climbing and uneven paths. If in doubt about mobility, skip these and instead visit Dhauli (a shorter, easier site with views) or explore the museums.
