The short answer

Best areas to stay in Bikaner

  1. 01

Old city edge (near Kote Gate, close to Junagarh Fort)

Best for: Those who want atmosphere, havelis and immediate access to the fort

Some of Rajasthan's best heritage and haveli hotels are here. You are close to the bazaar and can walk to the fort in minutes. The trade-off is noise, traffic and narrow lanes; check lift access and street parking carefully if you are travelling with older travellers. Morning and evening walks are more pleasant than midday.

  2. 02

    Junagarh Fort vicinity (Surajpol area)

Best for: Families and those who want easy fort access with some calm

A few good mid-range and heritage hotels are near the fort but slightly less crowded than the old city edge. You have quick access to sightseeing, restaurants and some shade from the surrounding buildings. Taxis and autos are readily available.

  3. 03

    Bikaner Cantonment (civil lines area)

Best for: Travellers who want quieter, more orderly surroundings and railway station access

A wider, tree-lined area with good restaurants, hospitals and pharmacies. About 10–15 minutes by car to the fort. Some heritage hotels and colonial-era buildings are here. You will depend on a car or taxi for sightseeing, but the environment is less hectic.

  4. 04

North of the city (Gajner Road)

Best for: Those who want resort-style accommodation and a break from the city

A few heritage hotels and resorts are on the route to Gajner Lake, about 10–15 km away. Good for a quieter evening and sunset views. You will depend on a car for everything; restaurant options are limited outside your hotel.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Bikaner

  • Hire a car and driver for the whole day. Bikaner spreads over many kilometres, and the midday heat is intense. A car gives you a cool place to rest between sights.
  • Do Junagarh Fort in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the worst heat. The fort has many stairs and uneven stone, but they are not extreme. Take breaks in the palace rooms, which are cooler than outside.
  • Plan a long midday break, at least two hours, at your hotel or a shaded café. Even in winter, the midday sun is tiring when you are walking.
  • The old city is best explored slowly on foot in the early morning or late afternoon. Hire a guide if you want stories about the havelis; they make the walk more interesting and give you places to rest.
