The short answer
Best areas to stay in Bodh Gaya
- 01
Town centre (near Mahabodhi Temple and main market)
Best for: Pilgrims who want to walk to the temple, participate in early morning prayers and be at the centre of activity
Close to the main temple, guesthouses, and chai stalls. The atmosphere is busy during peak season (October to February) with pilgrims and monks. Rooms are basic but clean. The trade-off is noise from early morning prayers and temple bells, and a steady stream of visitors.
- 02
Thai Monastery area (north of the main temple)
Best for: Visitors seeking a quieter, more meditative environment with access to a well-maintained monastery
The Thai Monastery guesthouse offers clean, simple rooms in a peaceful setting. A walk of about 10–15 minutes from the main temple. Fewer crowds, a calm atmosphere and often meals included with accommodation.
- 03
Japanese Monastery guesthouse
Best for: Travellers who prefer a structured, clean and quiet stay with close community ties
Often reserved for Japan-based visitors but sometimes accepts others. Peaceful grounds, simple Japanese-style accommodation, and included meals. About 15–20 minutes from the main temple on foot.
- 04
Gaya (nearby city, 15 km south)
Best for: Travellers wanting larger hotels, more restaurants and modern facilities while visiting Bodh Gaya as a day trip
Gaya has bigger hotels, banks and services. A 30–45 minute drive to Bodh Gaya daily. Less atmospheric but more convenient if you need reliable infrastructure. Many pilgrims split their stay between Bodh Gaya and Gaya.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Bodh Gaya
- The Mahabodhi Temple and courtyard are mostly level. The steps inside the sanctum are steep; you can enjoy the courtyard and outer areas without climbing them.
- Visit the temple and main sites at dawn or mid-morning before the heat builds and crowds increase. Afternoons are quiet but hot from March to October.
- Hire a local taxi or jeep for your stay rather than walking long distances, especially in summer months. The town is small enough that a vehicle makes trips to outlying monasteries easy.
- Wear comfortable walking shoes and carry water, a hat and sunscreen. The temple courtyard has shaded areas, but much of the walking is in open sun.
