Why it matters

Why Mullayanagiri Peak is worth your time

Mullayanagiri is the gateway to understanding Chikmagalur. The Western Ghats are ancient mountains, and this peak offers a vantage point over the landscape that humans have shaped for centuries: the coffee plantations, the spice gardens, the forest reserves. It is also spiritually significant, with a temple at the summit linked to the wider Hindu sacred geography of the region.

For travellers, it is the proof that Chikmagalur is more than coffee shops and estate tours. It is a place of walking, wide views and the kind of effort that makes a memory last. Many visitors plan to do just a part of it but end up going to the top.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Hire a car or rickshaw to the village of Mullayanagiri, where the trek starts. The path climbs steadily through cardamom and coffee plantations, then into forest. About halfway, the trees open out and you see glimpses of the valleys below. The final section is rocky and steep, with the summit shrine appearing suddenly.

At the top, there is a small temple and a platform for views. On clear days, you see the coffee country, the Baba Budangiri ridge to the west, and on really clear mornings, you can see the plains. The path down is the same route, so take your time and watch your footing on the loose rocks.

Most people do this as a morning trek, leaving town by 6 am so they reach the top by 9 or 10 am, well before afternoon clouds. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, wear a hat and apply sunscreen. The stream crossings on the way up are usually dry; do not rely on water sources.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start the trek before 6 am to avoid afternoon clouds
  • Bring plenty of water; streams are unreliable
  • Wear sturdy trekking shoes with grip
  • The path is steep and rocky; do not hurry the descent
  • A local guide is useful in mist, which is common after 11 am
  • Do not trek alone

Senior comfort
The trek is continuous uphill, roughly 900 metres of elevation gain over about 6 km. The path is rocky and steep. Many older travellers manage the climb if they are fit, walk slowly and take rests. Coming down is harder on the knees. It is not realistic for those with joint problems or who cannot walk for two hours unbroken.
Tickets and access
No entry fee. The forest is open to trekkers, and guides are available at the base village for a negotiable fee, which is a good idea if the path is unclear in mist.
