Nalnad Palace was built around 1865 by Raja Veerarajendra of Coorg as a summer residence and administrative centre. It reflects the Kodava architectural style: compact courtyards, narrow defensive passages and intricate wood carving. The palace shows how Coorg's rulers governed a small, coffee-growing kingdom separate from the major Rajput or Mughal states.
When Coorg came under British administration, the Raja's power was curtailed, but the palace remained the family seat. Today it is one of the best-preserved examples of late 19th-century royal architecture in South India.

Drive up to Kakkabe from the south or north and find the palace near the village centre.
