Why it matters

Why Laxmi Narayan Temple is worth your time

Laxmi Narayan Temple was built in 1938 by Ghanshyam Das Birla, a wealthy industrialist and philanthropist, as part of a broader effort to preserve and promote Hindu traditions in modern India. It is one of a series of temples the Birla family built across the country. Unlike ancient pilgrimage temples, it reflects 20th-century temple architecture and the role of merchant families in supporting religious institutions.

For travellers, it offers a comfortable way to experience Hindu worship without the crowds and complexity of very ancient sites. The free community meal reflects the principle of service (seva) central to Hindu practice.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Remove your shoes at the counter near the entrance and climb the broad steps. The temple complex has separate shrine areas for Lakshmi (goddess of wealth) and Saraswati (goddess of learning) at the sides, with Narayana (Vishnu) in the central sanctum. The marble work is intricate, with carvings of deities and scenes from the scriptures.

Inside, the sanctum is alive with the murmur of prayers, the tinkle of bells and the offering of flowers and incense. You will be jostled by worshippers, which is part of the experience. Aarti (ritual prayer with light and music) happens several times a day; attending one gives a sense of devotion and community.

After darshan (temple visit), sit on a bench in one of the courtyards. The temple runs a free community kitchen (langar) offering simple vegetarian meals; eating here is a tradition and all are welcome, though there may be a queue.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Remove footwear at the counter; carry socks if the marble is hot
  • Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered
  • Aarti times vary; ask staff for the schedule
  • The community kitchen is free; joining the queue is encouraged
  • Photography inside the sanctum is often restricted
  • The temple is busy on weekends and religious festivals
