Day 1: Temples and river
Begin at dawn at Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal Hills; arrive early to avoid the worst crowds and heat. Spend two hours exploring the inner sanctum, courtyards and the surrounding hilltop area. Have a light breakfast at a temple-side chai stall. Walk down to visit Umananda Temple on Peacock Island if energy permits, or take an auto to the Brahmaputra Ghat for a walk along the riverbank. After midday rest indoors or at your hotel, visit the Assam State Museum in the late afternoon when it is cooler. In the evening, walk through Paltan Bazaar to see the market come alive, stop for street snacks, and end with dinner at a local restaurant serving Assamese cuisine.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Visit Kamakhya Temple early in the morning before it becomes crowded and the heat builds. Wear loose, modest clothing and remove shoes at the temple entrance.
- Plan one major outing in the morning and rest indoors during the hottest hours (12–4 pm). Guwahati's afternoons are tiring even in winter.
- The Assam State Museum and Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra are mostly level and air-conditioned; good choices for afternoon rest.
- Hire a car and driver for the day rather than taking autos between sights. It gives you a cool place to rest and avoids long walks.
- Carry water, a hat, sunscreen and socks for temple floors. Marble can be very hot underfoot.
- Hospitals and pharmacies are concentrated around GS Road and Pan Bazaar. Note the nearest one to your hotel before starting.
