From the Man Mandir Palace or the central plateau, locate Teli Ka Mandir. It stands about 30 metres tall, a square tower rising abruptly from the ground with no elaborate base or decoration. The exterior is weathered sandstone, carved with simple bands and relief work that has mostly weathered smooth.
Step inside the small doorway at the base. The interior is a single, tall chamber rising through all levels of the tower, with a small sanctum at the base containing a lingam. The chamber is lit by a few small openings high up, creating a dappled, cool atmosphere. The silence inside is complete.
A narrow, very tight spiral staircase rises from one corner. If you are flexible and not claustrophobic, climb to the upper levels and emerge onto the small roof platform. From there you can see over the fort and across Gwalior. The view is brief and the climb is tight, so go only if you enjoy confined spaces.
