Why it matters

Why Mangrove Creek Kayaking is worth your time

The mangrove creeks are Havelock's nursery ground for fish, crustaceans and birds. Juvenile fish shelter among the roots; birds nest in the canopy; and the detritus from the mangroves feeds the offshore reefs. The creeks also protect the islands from storm surge and erosion.

Understanding mangrove ecology helps you see Havelock not as a collection of beaches but as an integrated coastal system where land, water and life interact. The Andaman Islands' mangroves are threatened by development and aquaculture elsewhere in India; experiencing them here shows what a healthy system looks like.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Book a kayak tour at your hotel or with a local guide. You will be taken by car to the creek entrance, usually at Kalipur or a side creek near Govind Nagar. The guide will show you how to hold the paddle and launch your kayak, then lead you slowly up the creek.

The water is calm and shallow, 1–3 metres deep. As you paddle, the mangrove roots become denser, and the canopy closes in. You will hear birds, crabs skittering in the mud, and the splash of small fish. The pace is slow because the point is observation, not speed. The guide will pause to point out birds, filter-feeding clams and tracks in the mud.

Some tours take you through tidal tunnels where the mangrove arches overhead and the creek narrows to a few metres. At high tide these are passable; at low tide you may walk the kayak through shallow sections. The return paddle is leisurely. Most people are surprised by how meditative the experience is.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • No experience is needed; guides teach paddling basics
  • Go in the morning for the best light and bird activity
  • Bring a camera if you want photos; paddling and photography are hard simultaneously
  • Wear quick-dry clothes; you will get damp
  • Sunscreen is essential; the water reflects light intensely
  • Ask your guide about the tide schedule; different times reveal different sections
