How to experience it
Come after lunch when the forts are too hot, or combine a late visit with the building lit up outside. Start on the ground floor, with its galleries of pottery, metalwork, ivory and arms, then find the Egyptian mummy in the lower hall. It is one of only a handful in India and a big hit with children.
Upstairs, look for the carpet collection, especially the large Persian garden carpet, and the miniature paintings, costumes and musical instruments. The corridors are lined with painted murals copied from Indian and world art traditions, so look up as you walk. Many visitors rush through; slowing down in two or three galleries is better than seeing all of them.
Afterwards, walk out into Ram Niwas Garden, then take a short auto ride to Bapu Bazaar or MI Road for shopping and dinner. If you are here in the evening, the illuminated facade with pigeons circling above the dome is one of Jaipur's best free views.
