Return to town for lunch and rest through the hot afternoon. In the late afternoon, walk through the Main Bazaar for handicrafts and local goods, then head to a café or your hotel's viewpoint to watch light fade over the hills. If time allows, visit Chitrabhanu heritage home or the Kalimpong Siddheswara Kali Temple.

2 days in Kalimpong

1. 01

   Day 1: The town and monasteries

   Begin at Zang Dhok Palri Phodang or Durpin Monastery early, then walk back through town to explore the Main Bazaar for wooden crafts, prayer wheels and khada scarves. Visit Chitrabhanu heritage home in mid-morning to learn about Rabindranath Tagore's connection to Kalimpong. Have lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, take a gentle walk to Deolo Hill for views, or visit Dr. Graham's Homes heritage campus. End with an evening meal in the bazaar.

   Day 2: Nature and nearby escapes

   Take a day trip to Relli Ghat, a scenic riverside stop on the Teesta, roughly 45 minutes away (traffic dependent). Walk the quiet paths above the river, have lunch at a small local eatery, and return early. Alternatively, visit Kalimpong's flower nurseries (Prema Nurseries, Shangrila Nurseries and others) to see orchids, dahlias and rhododendrons being cultivated. Spend the afternoon indoors at one of the heritage homes or a local café, then watch sunset from the town.

3 days in Kalimpong

1. 01

   Day 1: Monasteries and heritage

   Visit Zang Dhok Palri Phodang early, explore the prayer halls and sit by the cliff viewpoint over the Teesta Valley. Walk back to town and visit Chitrabhanu heritage home (the former residence of Rathindranath Tagore, preserved by the state government). Have lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, explore the Main Bazaar, then visit Kalimpong Siddheswara Kali Temple or St. Andrew's Church, whichever aligns with your interests.

   Day 2: Dr. Graham's Homes and Durpin Monastery

   Spend the morning at Dr. Graham's Homes, a heritage mission school founded in 1884, walking the grounds and learning about its role in Kalimpong's history. Have lunch and rest. In the late afternoon, visit Durpin Monastery (perched above town) or Tharpa Choeling Monastery for evening prayers if available. End with a quiet walk and evening meal.

   Day 3: Valleys, nurseries and departure

   Visit a flower nursery such as Prema Nurseries or Shangrila to see orchid cultivation, or take a day trip to Relli Ghat and the Teesta gorge, roughly 45 minutes away. Alternatively, drive up to the Kumai Bridge viewpoint for valley and mountain views. Return in early afternoon, rest, then depart for Darjeeling, Siliguri or onward travel.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

• The town is built on gentle slopes, not steep grades like Darjeeling. Walking is easier, but paths can be uneven after rain. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
• Monasteries are peaceful but may involve a few stairs and uneven ground. Go early in the day when it is cooler, and take breaks. Most monks are welcoming to respectful visitors.
• The Main Bazaar is walkable and uncrowded compared to Darjeeling. Shop in the afternoon when it is quieter, rather than the busy morning.
• Hire a car and driver for monastery visits and day trips. Roads are narrow and winding, and a good driver makes the difference. It also lets you rest when tired.
• Plan one main activity per day: a monastery visit, or Dr. Graham's Homes, or a day trip. Afternoons should be rest time; the altitude and pace mean you tire more easily.
• Kalimpong's small-town feel means fewer hospitals and pharmacies than Darjeeling. Choose a hotel near the bazaar if you need quick access to services. Note the nearest chemist and clinic before you start sightseeing.
