Khurbathang Plateau represents the high-altitude ecology of Ladakh: sparse life, extreme conditions and minimal human presence. How to experience it
Hire a jeep in Kargil for the rough track to the plateau. The road climbs steeply through sparse vegetation, crossing passes with increasingly broad views. Once on the plateau, the jeep can drop you off at a suitable point and you walk across the open expanse, surrounded by mountains.
The plateau is almost completely bare: sparse alpine herbs, exposed rock, and vast sky. Wind is constant, shapes clouds rapidly and carves the landscape into fantastic formations. Sunsets are extraordinary: the light spreads across the plateau and the distant peaks glow. If camping, position your tent carefully (away from ridges where wind is worst) and enjoy the profound silence of high altitude.
Return by jeep the same day or camp and trek further if you have time and equipment.
