The short answer
Best areas to stay in Kargil
- 01
Kargil Town Centre
Best for: Proximity to the bazaar and restaurants; a stay that puts you in the heart of local life
Small hotels and guesthouses near the bazaar are the norm. Rooms are basic but adequate, with hot water, bathrooms and heating (essential in winter). The trade-off is noise from the bazaar in early mornings and some evenings, and limited choice for dining. Check that your hotel has a hot-water system and heating before booking, and specify if you need a lift or ground-floor room.
- 02
Suru Valley (short drives north and south of Kargil)
Best for: Quieter evenings and valley views; base for Zanskar excursions or trekking
A handful of guesthouses and small hotels line the river or sit on hillsides overlooking the Suru valley. These are 5–15 km from town. They offer calm and better views, but you will depend on a car or taxi for every meal and shop visit. Roads can be slow in winter.
- 03
Dras (58 km west)
Best for: Combining Dras sightseeing with a stay in a cooler, quieter hill town; close to the War Memorial
A few guesthouses in Dras itself serve travellers. The town is higher, colder and quieter, with simpler amenities. It is worth a night if you want to spend a full day on Dras and the Kargil War Memorial without the long drive back to Kargil same-day. Roads between Dras and Kargil are good but can be slow in snow.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Kargil
- Acclimatize for 1–2 days in Kargil (2,676 m) before any active sightseeing. Consult your doctor about altitude before visiting, especially if you have heart or lung conditions.
- The bazaar walk is gentle and level, but avoid the hottest part of the afternoon and carry water. Restaurants are close by.
- Dras (3,300 m) is higher and colder. The drive from Kargil is scenic but takes 1.5 hours; consider a single day trip rather than staying overnight unless you are very fit.
- Hotels have simple rooms without air conditioning (not needed at this altitude) but with heating. Confirm heating works and the bathroom is adjacent to the room to avoid long walks at night.
