Plan 01

1 day in Katra

  1. 01

Day 1: Shrine visit and return

Arrive in Katra by late morning. Have lunch at your hotel or a local dhaba. Take the ropeway (or start walking early morning, depending on your group's fitness) to Bhairavnath base. If using the ropeway, the 2-kilometre walk to the cave takes about 45 minutes to an hour with rest stops. Visit the Vaishno Devi cave shrine, perform the darshan (viewing ritual), and descend the same way. Return to Katra in the late afternoon and rest. Spend the evening at your hotel or have a simple dinner at a neighbourhood dhaba.

Plan 02

2 days in Katra

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and Bhairavnath temple

Arrive by late morning and settle into your hotel. Have a light lunch and rest for a couple of hours. In the late afternoon, visit the Bhairavnath temple, which sits lower down the path (about 2 kilometres from Katra town and visible from many points) and is less crowded than the main shrine. Return to Katra for dinner and an early night.

  2. 02

Day 2: Vaishno Devi shrine and departure

Start early, have a light breakfast, and head to the ropeway base by 8am to avoid the midday crowd. Take the ropeway or walk the 13-kilometre path from Katra town, depending on fitness. Complete the cave darshan, rest for a while, and begin your descent by early afternoon. Return to Katra by 4 or 5pm. Depending on your travel plans, either rest here overnight or begin your journey back to Jammu in the evening.

Plan 03

3 days in Katra

  1. 01

Day 1: Arrival and Bhairavnath temple

Arrive in Katra by late morning. Settle into your hotel and have lunch. Rest through the hottest part of the afternoon. In the late afternoon, take a short walk or drive to the Bhairavnath temple and viewpoint, which is less crowded and a good introduction to the landscape. Return for an early dinner and rest well.

  2. 02

Day 2: Main shrine, full day

Leave very early for the ropeway base or the main yatra path. If using the ropeway, depart by 7am; if walking the full 13-kilometre path, leave by 6am. Take your time, use rest stops and eating stalls along the way. Spend a full hour at the cave shrine if the crowds permit. Begin descent by noon or early afternoon. Arrive back in Katra by 4 or 5pm. Spend the evening resting and recovering.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Rest and surroundings

Sleep late and take a restorative day. Have a leisurely breakfast at your hotel. If anyone is still able, take a gentle walk in Katra town or visit a viewpoint over the valley. Have lunch at a local dhaba and try the regional food. Spend the afternoon at rest. In the evening, visit a nearby temple such as Durga Nivas temple (within Katra town), which is peaceful and unrushed. Have a simple dinner and prepare for departure the next morning.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Use the Bhairavnath ropeway if anyone in your group has knee, hip or heart concerns. It cuts the climb distance by about 11 kilometres and is a genuine aid, not a shortcut for the unfit.
  • Consult your doctor about altitude. The cave shrine sits at 1,900 metres, and even if Katra itself at 600 metres feels fine, the thin air at the top can cause headaches or shortness of breath. Spend two nights in Katra to acclimatize if worried.
  • Do the climb the day after you arrive, not the day you arrive. Spend your first evening resting, hydrating and eating a good meal. Your body will thank you on the climb.
  • Hire a porter if the walk worries you. Local porters (₹500–₹1,000) carry light bags and let you focus on the climb. Several run from the ropeway base and the town center.
  • Wear good walking boots with ankle support, not shoes or sandals. The path has loose stone and steep sections. Carry trekking poles if you have them; many stalls near the path rent them.
  • The yatra path is foot traffic only and often crowded. If you are slow or unsteady, climb very early (5–6am) to avoid the midday rush, which can feel chaotic.
