Why it matters

Why Tungnath Trek Trail is worth your time

Tungnath is the second-highest Shiva temple in India, and the trek to reach it is a rite of passage for serious Himalayan trekkers in India. It is part of the Panch Kedar circuit but is the most accessible by vehicle and foot, and thus the most frequently trekked. The Chandrashila Peak viewpoint above the temple is one of the clearest vantage points to see the high Himalayas, with visibility to some of the highest peaks.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Start from Chopta early in the morning, carrying enough water and snacks. The trek is uphill from the beginning, climbing through rhododendron and conifer forests, emerging into alpine meadows. At around 3,300 metres, the landscape becomes bare rock and grass. Tungnath temple appears suddenly, a small stone shrine at extreme altitude.

Many trekkers push on from Tungnath to Chandrashila Peak in 45 minutes to an hour, for 360-degree views and a deeper sense of achievement. The descent is steep and requires careful footwork on loose rock. Most trekkers make a two-day trip: Chopta to Tungnath (trek and rest), return to Chopta the next day. Advanced trekkers do it in a long day of 8–10 hours.

Acclimatisation is important: spending a night in Chopta (2,680 m) before trekking helps the body adjust to altitude. High-altitude sickness is possible; descend immediately if you experience severe headache, nausea or dizziness.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Acclimatise in Chopta the night before if possible
  • Start early (4–5 am) to reach the temple by mid-morning
  • Carry 2–3 litres of water; there are few refill points
  • Altitude sickness is real above 3,500 m; go slow
  • Weather changes fast; carry a rain jacket and warm layer
  • A guide is useful for route-finding and altitude advice
