The Baroda Museum was founded in the 1880s under Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, part of his effort to establish Vadodara as a centre of education and culture. Enter through the main gate and take a moment to appreciate the Indo-Saracenic facade, with its domes, turrets and carved stone. The building itself is worth the visit. Inside, the central court and grand halls give a sense of scale and grandeur.

Start with the sculpture gallery, which holds excellent pieces from various periods and regions. Then move through the painting galleries, which feature miniatures, Indian modern art and European works. The arms and weapons gallery is dense but good for history enthusiasts. The textile gallery shows fine examples of Gujarat's weaving and embroidery traditions. Many visitors spend the most time in the natural history section, which includes taxidermied animals and fossils.

A guide or audio guide helps you understand the context of objects. Without one, you can still enjoy the aesthetics of the pieces and the atmosphere of the building. Pace yourself; it is easy to feel overwhelmed by the quantity of objects.
