How to experience it
Devi Jagdambi is set slightly apart from the main axis of the western group. Its original dedication to Vishnu was changed to the goddess Jagdambi over time, and both traditions are represented in the carvings. Approach from the south, where the entrance is clearer than from other angles. The sanctum is not deep inside, so the connection between the external carvings and the inner shrine is more direct than at Kandariya Mahadeva.
Look for the bands of sculpture showing apsaras, many of them portrayed with children, in intimate and tender scenes. The masculine imagery is present but recessive. The temple's scale is human; you do not feel dwarfed as you do at Kandariya Mahadeva. Sit in the mandapa and let the proportions settle around you.
The exterior west-facing wall has some of the finest carving, and the transition from the outer hall to the sanctum is gentle and clear. This is a good second or third temple if you want a change of scale and mood from the grandeur of Kandariya Mahadeva.
