In the dry season (December to May) the falls are a thin cascade, but the gorge itself is the main attraction: vertical cliffs of banded red, brown and black stone, each band a different geological epoch. The river winds below, and on clear mornings you see forests on the far bank.
Spend time looking at the rock layers. They tell a story of the region's geological history, with volcanic flows (the black bands) interspersed with sedimentary deposits. If the river is flowing well (usually until February), wade into the shallows at the base if you are comfortable; the water is cold but clear.
Pack a picnic: no food is sold nearby. Sit and absorb the space. Then drive back to Khajuraho in the late afternoon, stopping for tea on the way.
