Why it matters

Why Kodai Lake is worth your time

Kodai Lake was created in the 1820s by the British administrator John Sullivan, the founder of Kodaikanal, by damming a natural depression. It became the social and recreational heart of the hill station, where the colonial community walked and rowed, and later where Indian families came for their holidays after independence. The lake and the Palani hills around it define Kodaikanal's appeal: a cool refuge with water, shade and views.

For travellers, the lake is the easiest entry point to the place. It is public, it is central and it is free. Walking it helps you get your bearings and meet other families visiting the hill station.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Park at the main entry near the lake café and take the paved path along the shore. The walk is flat and shaded by blue gums and other hill-station trees. You will pass boating vendors, tea stalls and families walking. The western arm offers the calmest views; the eastern side gets busier with tour groups. Early morning, before 8 am, is quietest.

If you boat, a half-hour on the water gives you a perspective from the centre of the lake and a different angle on the shoreline. The boatmen will tell you the lake's history: it is a natural depression that was dammed and widened in the 19th century. You cannot swim, and the water is cold year-round.

On a long day, walk part of the circuit, rest at a bench or café, then do another section. The full perimeter is roughly five km and takes three hours at a steady pace. Most families do one or two arms and call it done.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Park at the main café area; other entry points have limited parking
  • Walk early morning for calm water and silence; afternoons are busier
  • Carry water and a hat; parts are exposed
  • Do not expect swimming; the water is for boats only
  • Boating rates should be fixed in advance; negotiate or use your hotel's contact
