Plan 01

1 day in Lachung

  1. 01

Day 1: Lachung Monastery and Yumthang sunrise

Start before dawn and drive to Yumthang Valley (about 30 minutes) to catch sunrise over the rhododendron meadows and Himalayan peaks. Have a simple breakfast by the roadside, then return to Lachung by mid-morning. Spend the afternoon at Lachung Monastery (set in a quiet compound with prayer wheels and views of the valley); remove your shoes at the entrance, dress modestly, and take time to sit quietly or speak with monks if you wish. In the late afternoon, walk along the Lachung River near the village and visit any local handicraft shops if energy permits. Have dinner with a view of the evening light on the mountains.

Plan 02

2 days in Lachung

  1. 01

Day 1: Yumthang Valley and Lachung Monastery

Drive to Yumthang Valley before sunrise for the clearest light and fewest crowds. Spend 2–3 hours walking the flower meadows, crossing the river on a sturdy bridge, and photographing the views. Return to Lachung by late morning, rest through the afternoon, then visit Lachung Monastery at dusk when the light is soft and the evening aarti (prayer ritual) sometimes takes place. Have dinner at your homestay.

  2. 02

Day 2: Thangu Valley or Chungthang

If the weather is clear, drive to Thangu Valley (about 45 minutes, alpine grassland with yak herds and mountain views) or to Chungthang, the confluence of the Lachen and Lachung Rivers, which is a natural landmark and a good photo stop. On the return, visit any local markets or handicraft shops in Lachung village. A visit to a local homestay for momo-making or traditional cooking is also possible if arranged in advance.

Plan 03

3 days in Lachung

  1. 01

Day 1: Yumthang Valley and evening monastery

Pre-dawn drive to Yumthang Valley for sunrise, spend the morning exploring the flower meadows and the Yumthang Hot Spring area (if it has been reopened; check with your hotel). Return to Lachung by late morning. Rest in the afternoon and visit Lachung Monastery at dusk.

  2. 02

Day 2: Thangu Valley and Kanyam

Drive to Thangu Valley (alpine meadow, roughly 45 minutes) and spend 2–3 hours walking among the yak herds and wildflowers. If physically able, continue to Kanyam (a small village at a high pass with panoramic views, another 1–2 hours by car if roads are open). Return to Lachung via Lachung village and the Lachung River viewpoints.

  3. 03

Day 3: Chungthang confluence and local culture

Visit Chungthang (confluence point, roughly 45 minutes away), walk by the rivers, and photograph the meeting of the Lachen and Lachung. On the return to Lachung, visit the village market or arrange a visit to a local Lepcha or Tibetan household to learn about handicrafts, weaving, or traditional food. Finish with a quiet walk near your accommodation and pack for departure.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Before travelling, get a medical check-up and discuss the altitude (9,600 feet) with your doctor. Breathlessness and headaches are common; bring aspirin and consult your guide if symptoms worsen.
  • Stay at least 1–2 nights in a lower-altitude town (like Mangan or Siliguri) before going to Lachung. This helps your body acclimatize and reduces altitude sickness.
  • Hire a private car and driver for the entire trip. Do not rely on shared taxis or group tours; you need flexibility to rest, stop for water, or turn back if needed.
  • Book homestays in advance and confirm they have heating (fire or heater), hot water, and a clear plan for meals. The village has no medical clinic; check the nearest hospital location before arrival.
  • Limit day trips to Yumthang (sunrise) and Thangu (morning); skip Kanyam and high-altitude treks. Rest in the afternoon and stay indoors if the weather turns cold or wet.
  • Carry warm clothes in layers: thermal underwear, sweaters, a windproof jacket, a hat and gloves. Even in spring and autumn, mornings and evenings are cold.
