How to experience it
The drive to Nubra goes north from Leh, climbing to Khardung La (5,359 metres), one of the highest motorable passes in the world. The ascent takes an hour or more, and the air thins noticeably. At the top there is a small settlement and a checkpoint. From there the road descends into Nubra Valley, which opens into surprising greenery—poplars, willows and apricot orchards—watered by the Siachen River.
At Diskit, the main village, visit Diskit Monastery and walk the sand dunes. Many visitors book camel rides on the dunes, a novelty nowhere else in Ladakh. The camels are two-humped Bactrians, not the single-humped variety of Indian deserts. Spend an hour or more on the dunes, then explore the village or drive upstream to quieter sections of the valley.
The return journey retraces the same route. If you are doing this as a day trip, start very early and plan to return before dark.
