Plan 01

1 day in Lonavala

  1. 01

Day 1: Caves and a viewpoint

Arrive early and head straight to Karla Caves for the morning, spending about 1.5–2 hours exploring the main chaitya hall and sculpture. The caves are usually quieter in the early hours. Grab lunch at a local dhaba or restaurant in town. In the afternoon, drive up to Duke's Nose or Lion's Point for the view and a short walk. If the monsoon is on, watch for waterfalls on the way. Return to town for an evening walk through the old bazaar, a cup of chai and a simple dinner.

Plan 02

2 days in Lonavala

  1. 01

Day 1: Karla Caves and evening viewpoint

Start at Karla Caves early, spending a relaxed 2 hours inside the chaitya hall and examining the carvings. The caves are best visited in the morning light and before crowds arrive mid-morning. Walk around the site if energy permits; otherwise, rest in the cool interior. Return to town for lunch and an afternoon rest if it is hot. In the late afternoon, head to Lion's Point for sunset views over the valleys. If time allows, walk through the old bazaar for textiles and local snacks.

  2. 02

Day 2: Bhaja Caves and a lake or fort

Visit Bhaja Caves in the morning, a slightly smaller and often quieter site than Karla, with beautiful carved facades. Walk the short distance to the Adinath temple nearby for a fuller picture of the area's Buddhist heritage. After lunch, choose either Tungarli Lake for a scenic walk and picnic, or take a day trip to Rajmachi or Visapur Fort for a gentle climb and views. The caves and lake route is better for families with seniors; the fort requires more stamina.

Plan 03

3 days in Lonavala

  1. 01

Day 1: Karla Caves and cave exploration

Dedicate a full morning to Karla Caves, including the main chaitya hall, the caves above it, and the carvings. Have lunch in town and rest through the hottest part of the afternoon. In the late afternoon, visit Bhairavnath Temple in the town, a small pilgrimage site, or explore Ryewood Park for a cooler, quieter botanical walk.

  2. 02

Day 2: Bhaja Caves and viewpoints

Visit Bhaja Caves and the adjacent Adinath temple. The site is less crowded than Karla and the caves are intimate. After lunch, split the afternoon between two viewpoints: Duke's Nose and Lion's Point. Duke's Nose is a short but steeper climb with dramatic views; Lion's Point is a gentler walk. Pick based on energy. If monsoon, watch for waterfalls on the road.

  3. 03

Day 3: Lake, fort or garden

Take a full-day excursion to one of the following: Rajmachi Fort and Visapur Fort for a day-long trek and views (best for fit groups); Pawna Lake for a calm morning boat or walk and picnic lunch; or Wunderbar Garden and Tungarli Lake for a leisurely botanical walk and local food. Return to Lonavala in the evening for a final dinner and overnight train or drive back to Mumbai or Pune.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Karla and Bhaja caves are cool, level and do not require arduous climbing. Plan them as the main morning activity and rest afterward.
  • Viewpoints like Duke's Nose and Lion's Point involve short climbs. Skip them if mobility is limited, or arrange a car close to the top and walk only the final stretch.
  • Monsoon (June–August) is wet and slippery; paths and viewpoints can be dangerous. Stick to caves and level areas, and avoid viewpoint treks during rain.
  • Stay in the town centre or near Tungarli Lake where shops and restaurants are accessible. Farm stays can be charming but remote—check for medical facilities and transport nearby.
  • Hire a car and driver for the whole day. Roads are winding and parking at viewpoints is scattered; a driver reduces fatigue.
  • The old bazaar can be crowded on weekends and monsoon weeks. Visit mid-morning on a weekday if possible.
