The short answer
Best areas to stay in Mahabalipuram
- 01
Beachfront and Shore Temple area
Best for: Close to the main monuments and sunset walks
A short walk or rickshaw ride from the Shore Temple, with hotels ranging from simple guesthouses to mid-range properties. The sea breeze is pleasant in the evening. Trade-off: can be busy with day-trippers and the sound of fishing activity in the early mornings.
- 02
Main market and temple street
Best for: Walking access to shops, restaurants and the central monuments
The town's main cluster of guesthouses and small hotels, about 5–10 minutes on foot from the Pancha Rathas and caves. More affordable and practical than beachfront, with better restaurant variety.
- 03
Tirukazhukundram road (towards Tirupati)
Best for: A quieter setting with some resort-style properties
A few kilometres inland, with less foot traffic and some properties set in garden grounds. Useful if you plan to make day trips inland or prefer quietness, but you will need transport to visit monuments.
- 04
Covelong (Mahabalipuram South)
Best for: Beach resorts and longer stays
A separate coastal settlement south of the main town, with some larger resort properties. Good for families who want a base and plan leisurely days, but further from the main monuments.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Mahabalipuram
- Visit the Shore Temple and Pancha Rathas at or just after sunrise, before the midday heat and day-tripper crowds. The light is also best in early morning.
- Plan two major activities in the morning and keep afternoons free for rest at your hotel. Even at 25–28 degrees Celsius in winter, the sun and stone are tiring.
- Wear a hat, sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes; bring a refillable water bottle and sip regularly. Dehydration in coastal heat is a real concern.
- Hire a local guide for half a day to understand the carvings and history; it enriches the visit and means you do not have to read plaques while standing in the sun.
