Plan 01

1 day in Mumbai

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, Colaba and the Gateway

Start early at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (Victoria Terminus) to see the railway station's magnificent Victorian-Gothic facade without crowds. Walk through Fort's narrow lanes to the Cathedral and the old rampart walls, then head to the Gateway of India as the morning light hardens. Lunch at a street food stall or sit-down restaurant in Colaba. Rest in the early afternoon. In the late afternoon, take a ferry to Elephanta Caves if you have energy, or stay in South Mumbai and walk Marine Drive as the light softens, ending with chai or snacks on the Gateway steps.

Plan 02

2 days in Mumbai

  1. 01

Day 1: The old city and the Gateway

Begin at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, walk through Fort past the Cathedral and City Library, and visit the Rajabai Tower's exterior (the tower is closed to casual visits but worth seeing from the street). Continue to the Mint building and the former Fort walls. Have lunch in Colaba, rest through the heat of the afternoon, then return to the Gateway of India for sunset and street food. An evening walk through Colaba's lanes rewards you with street vendors, colonial architecture and a sense of the old city's layered history.

  2. 02

Day 2: Temples, island ferries and Marine Drive

Start at the Siddhivinayak Temple in Dadar for the morning aarti if you are interested in temple life, or skip this and head straight to Chowpatty Beach to walk Marine Drive in the morning light. Take a ferry to Elephanta Caves if the sea is calm (book in advance; the journey takes about 45 minutes each way and the caves involve stairs and walking). Otherwise, visit the Hanging Gardens for views over the city, the Mani Bhavan museum for Gandhi history, and spend the evening on Marine Drive or at Chowpatty with street food vendors.

Plan 03

3 days in Mumbai

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort and the Gateway

Spend the morning walking Fort's lanes: Victoria Terminus, the Cathedral, Rajabai Tower, St. George Fort and the high walls of the original fortress. Have lunch at a local restaurant or street food stall in Colaba. Rest in the afternoon. In the late afternoon, visit the Gateway of India and the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel's exterior. Walk along the waterfront as the light changes, ending with chai and snacks on the steps or nearby.

  2. 02

Day 2: Elephanta and Marine Drive

Take the early morning ferry to Elephanta Caves, giving you the morning for the walk and cave temples (hire a guide if mobility is a concern; the caves involve 106 steps down from the ferry and uneven ground inside). Return by early afternoon, rest, then drive Marine Drive in the late afternoon light. Stop at Chowpatty Beach to walk among the vendors and old colonial buildings, and watch the city as evening comes.

  3. 03

Day 3: Temples, museums and neighbourhoods

Visit the Siddhivinayak Temple in Dadar for an example of a well-kept Hindu temple, then walk through Dadar's residential lanes to see how Mumbaikars live away from the tourist areas. Stop at the Mani Bhavan museum to see where Gandhi stayed during his Mumbai visits. Lunch and a midday rest are essential. In the late afternoon, visit the Hanging Gardens or the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum if museums interest you, or take a local train from CST to Bandra and walk the promenade there for views of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and the coastline. End with dinner in a local restaurant, sampling regional cuisine.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Do not underestimate the heat, especially April to May. Plan major sightseeing for early morning (6–10 AM) and late afternoon (4 PM onwards). Rest indoors between 11 AM and 4 PM, with air conditioning.
  • Hire a car with a driver for the full day if possible. Traffic is chaotic and pavements are crowded; a car provides rest, coolness and flexibility.
  • Choose a hotel with a lift, reliable air conditioning and easy car access. Colaba and Fort have narrow lanes where cars sometimes cannot reach the door. Bandra or Marine Drive are quieter, with wider streets.
  • The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Siddhivinayak Temple are the main attractions, and both involve walking and uneven ground. Fort's lanes are narrow and crowded, making navigation tiring.
  • Ferries to Elephanta involve sea conditions and steps at both ends; check the weather and your balance and energy before committing.
  • Street food is iconic but carries risk if you have a sensitive stomach. Stick to busy, high-turnover stalls, avoid water, and consider that unfamiliar food can upset digestion.
