Why it matters

Why The Flats (Lake Shore Path) is worth your time

The Flats represent a successful public intervention: creating access to a naturally beautiful water body without commercialising it entirely. While much of Naini Lake's shore is now built upon by hotels and homes, the Flats path gives everyone—tourist and resident—a chance to be by the water and experience the lake in its landscape context. It is true democracy at work: the waterfront reclaimed as public space for all to enjoy and use.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Enter from any of several points along the main road or from the boat landing areas. The path follows the water's edge, sometimes right at the shoreline, sometimes slightly inland with water visible through trees. In sections, the old Nainital landscape—forest and stone—is visible. In others, the infrastructure of the town is present.

Walk slowly, pausing at spots with water access. Early morning, fishermen are still out and the light is soft. The water reflects the surrounding hills and the sky. As you walk, you see the whole geography of Nainital: the Mall Road shops terraced above, the opposite shore with its hotels and residences, and the narrowing lake towards the north end where it drains to a natural outlet.

Many sections have benches facing the water. Settle on one and sit as long as you wish. The lake is busy with boats—rowboats, pedal boats, motorboats—so you can watch the activity if you like. At sunset, the colours on the water are worth a pause. The evening walk is more social; the morning walk is more contemplative.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Go early in the morning for peace and soft light
  • Bring water if you plan a long walk
  • Wear comfortable shoes suitable for even pavement
  • Avoid midday when the sun is intense
  • The path can be crowded on weekends; weekdays are quieter
  • Local vendors sell snacks along the way; quality varies
