Plan 01

1 day in Nalanda

  1. 01

Day 1: Nalanda Mahavihara and the museum

Arrive early and spend two to three hours at the Nalanda Archaeological Museum in the town, which explains the history and displays artefacts from the site. Then drive to Nalanda Mahavihara archaeological site. Hire a site guide (available at the entrance) and walk through the main temple and monastery ruins, focusing on Temple 12 (the largest), Temple 3 (Sariputta Stupa), and the Baladitya Temple. The walk takes about two hours at a moderate pace. Return to town for lunch and a rest. In the late afternoon, visit the small Xuanzang Memorial nearby, which honours the Chinese pilgrim who studied here in the 7th century. End with an evening walk in the town bazaar.

Plan 03

3 days in Nalanda

  1. 01

Day 1: Nalanda archaeology and museum

Begin with the Nalanda Archaeological Museum, which provides essential context. Drive to Nalanda Mahavihara and spend a full morning exploring with a site guide: Temple 12, Temple 3, Baladitya Temple, the Shilapramana, and the monastery ruins. Have a long lunch. In the afternoon, visit the Xuanzang Memorial and smaller temples and stupas on the site. End with a walk in town.

  2. 02

Day 2: Rajgir and Buddhist sites

Drive to Rajgir and spend the full day there. Start at Griddhakuta (Vulture Peak) early, either by ropeway or a 30-minute walk, for views and the cave where the Buddha taught. Visit the Japanese Stupa, Jivaka Bamboo Grove, and the Venuvan monastery. Have lunch in Rajgir. In the afternoon, see the ruins of Nalanda's ancient college site in Rajgir, walk the surrounding hills if energy allows, and return to Nalanda by evening.

Continue to Bodh Gaya (about 1 to 1.5 hours further), visit the Mahabodhi Temple (a UNESCO site), and spend an hour in the temple complex and surrounding gardens. Return to Nalanda in the late evening, or stay overnight in Bodh Gaya if energy allows a fuller visit there.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Heat: April to June is very hot with little shade at the archaeological site. Plan outdoor sightseeing for the first three hours after sunrise, rest through the afternoon, and carry more water than you think you need.
  • Getting around: There is no metro or reliable local rail network linking the sights. A private car and driver for the day is the practical way to cover the Nalanda site, museum, Xuanzang Memorial and any day trips to Rajgir or Pawapuri.
  • Walking: The Mahavihara site is gravel and packed earth rather than paved paths, and a full visit covers a mile or more with little shade. Sturdy, closed shoes matter more than general fitness.
  • Money: Carry cash for guides, small entry fees and roadside food; card and UPI acceptance is inconsistent outside hotels and larger shops in the town.
  • Dress: Light, breathable clothing suits most of the year, with a warm layer for winter mornings. Footwear must come off before entering the Jal Mandir causeway at Pawapuri and at working temples such as the Surajpur Sun Temple, so wear shoes that are quick to remove.
  • Closures: The Nalanda Archaeological Museum is closed on Fridays and public holidays. Confirm current hours before building a day around it, since the archaeological site itself keeps separate timings.
