The short answer

Best areas to stay in Nubra Valley

  1. 01

    Diskit

Best for: Travellers who want to be near the main monastery and valley centre

Diskit is the administrative hub and has the most guesthouses, basic restaurants and a small bazaar. It sits at 3,144 metres and is central for exploring both the Hunder sand dunes and the northern villages. Guesthouses are simple but clean. Evening power cuts are common in smaller properties.

  2. 02

    Hunder

Best for: Families interested in camel riding and sand dunes

Hunder is a quieter, smaller village about 30 kilometres from Diskit, where the sand dunes are and where most tourist camel-ride operations are based. It has fewer guesthouses than Diskit and a quieter atmosphere. Good for people who prefer simplicity; book accommodation in advance.

  3. 03

    Sumur

Best for: Travellers seeking deeper isolation and a village experience

Sumur is the most northerly major settlement, about 70 kilometres from Diskit, and the least touristy. It has a gompa, simple guesthouses and a genuinely remote feel. Roads to Sumur are rougher and slower; plan extra travel time. There are almost no restaurants, so arrange meals with your guesthouse.

  4. 04

    Panamik

Best for: Very remote travellers, nature lovers and trekking-base seekers

Panamik is the northernmost village, known for hot springs and trekking routes. Accommodation is very basic and may require advance booking through a Leh tour operator. This is for experienced independent travellers only.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Nubra Valley

  • Consult your doctor before travelling: the valley sits at 10,000–11,000 feet, and altitude sickness affects 30–50 per cent of visitors. Ascend slowly (spend a day in Leh first), drink water constantly and avoid alcohol and heavy exercise on arrival.
  • Use a private car with a good driver who knows the Khardung La road; it is narrow, often one-way, and has no guard rails. Commercial taxis do not usually operate on this route.
  • Stay in Diskit if possible: it is most central and has the best facilities. Hunder and Sumur are charming but more isolated and basic.
  • The sand dunes at Hunder are beautiful but exhausting: loose sand tires legs quickly, and the sun is intense. Camel rides are easier than walking, but the motion can be rough on older knees. Skip the dunes if you have mobility concerns.
