The short answer

Best areas to stay in Pachmarhi

  1. 01

The Cantonment (near the main town centre)

Best for: Travellers who want to walk to shops, restaurants and the Church

The heart of Pachmarhi, with access to the few eateries and shops available. Hotels here range from heritage properties to modern guesthouses. The cantonment is quiet and tree-lined, but also the busiest part of town. Good for families and seniors who want walkable access to services.

  2. 02

Plateau edge (near Priyadarshini Point and Captain's Garden)

Best for: Visitors seeking views and quiet

More isolated than the cantonment, with hotels and resorts scattered across the plateau edge. Offers better views over the valleys and access to several viewpoints on foot. You will need a car or taxi for other sights, as distances are greater. Excellent for a retreat-like experience.

  3. 03

    Forsyth Road and upper cantonment

Best for: A balance of quiet and access

A middle ground between the cantonment centre and the plateau edge, with some heritage cottages and hotels. Cooler in the evening and quieter than the main bazaar. A 10–15 minute car ride to most attractions.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Pachmarhi

  • Pachmarhi is at 1,067 metres, but the air is thinner; if a parent has heart or lung issues, consult a doctor before visiting and travel slowly on the first day.
  • Hire a car and driver for the full stay. Road curves are steep and narrow; walking to most sights from a car park is far safer than relying on public transport.
  • Dhupgarh sunrise is rewarding but involves an early start and a short steep walk from the car park. If mobility is a concern, wait for daylight and go at a slower pace, or skip it in favour of viewpoints accessible by car.
  • Caves have uneven floors and some steps. Visit the easier ones (Pandav Caves, Jata Shankar) first to gauge comfort. A walking stick or hiking pole is helpful.
