Plan 01

1 day in Pahalgam

  1. 01

Day 1: Meadows and the town

Arrive early and head directly to Baisaran Valley for a gentle walk among the meadows and pine groves, ideally in the morning light. Return to town for lunch at a local restaurant near the Lidder River. In the late afternoon, walk through Pahalgam's small bazaar, visit the Pahalgam Golf Course if you have time, and watch the Lidder River at dusk. If you are preparing for the Amarnath yatra, use the afternoon to acclimatize and visit the main bazaar to book guides and porters for the trek.

Plan 02

2 days in Pahalgam

  1. 01

Day 1: Baisaran and river walks

Spend the morning in Baisaran Valley, a wide, grassy meadow ringed by mountains and evergreen trees. Have a leisurely walk, rest on the grass and enjoy the quiet. Drive back for a long lunch. In the afternoon, take a short walk along the Lidder River from the town centre, then spend the late afternoon and evening in the bazaar, shopping for local handicrafts and having dinner at a riverside restaurant.

  2. 02

Day 2: Betaab Valley and acclimatization

Drive out early to Betaab Valley, another verdant meadow, and spend the morning there. Return to Pahalgam by early afternoon for rest and preparation. Visit the town's small temple (if of interest), walk the golf course perimeter for views, and spend the evening restocking supplies or resting in your hotel. If time permits, a short walk into the forest near town can be refreshing without being tiring.

Plan 03

3 days in Pahalgam

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrival and Baisaran

Arrive and rest briefly, then drive to Baisaran Valley for the late morning and early afternoon. Walk and sit in the meadow, soak in the quiet. Return for a long lunch and afternoon rest. In the late afternoon, explore the Pahalgam bazaar gently, picking up warm clothes and snacks, and have dinner early.

  2. 02

Day 2: Betaab and a high meadow

Drive to Betaab Valley in the early morning. Spend two or three hours walking the meadows and along the Lidder River there. Return for a mid-morning rest, have lunch, and in the late afternoon drive to Aru Valley, another verdant meadow further into the mountains (about 1.5–2 hours one way). A short walk here offers higher vistas and fewer crowds than Baisaran or Betaab.

  3. 03

Day 3: Rest, temples and departure

A relaxed morning in Pahalgam town: walk the bazaar, visit the local Shiva temple or other shrines of interest. If you are fit and interested in altitude, take a drive or walk to the Pahalgam Golf Course for views over the valley. Have a final long lunch, stock up on food for the journey, and prepare to depart in the late afternoon or stay another night if the weather is clear and you want to rest before a yatra trek.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Altitude and pacing: Pahalgam sits at about 2,200 metres, and the valleys and meadows around it go higher still. Take the first day gently, drink plenty of water, and treat any breathlessness or headache as a sign to slow down rather than push on, especially for older travellers or anyone with heart or lung conditions.
  • Cold, even in summer: Nights and early mornings are cool to cold for most of the year, and higher meadows such as Baisaran and Aru are noticeably colder than the town. Pack real layers, a windproof jacket and a hat, even for a June or July visit.
  • Getting around needs a car: Local taxis and shared transport are limited outside the town centre. Hire a car and driver for day trips to Betaab, Aru or Chandanwari, and agree the route and waiting time in advance rather than negotiating at each stop.
  • Cash and card use: Card machines are common in larger hotels but far less reliable in the bazaar, at meadow ticket counters or with pony and jeep operators. Carry enough cash for a full day out, including small notes for fees and tips.
  • Dress and photography at worship sites: At Mamaleshwar Temple and other shrines, dress modestly, remove footwear at the platform, and ask before photographing anyone at prayer. There is no strict dress code at the meadows or bazaar, but modest clothing is generally more comfortable given the conservative local context.
  • Seasonal closures: Many hotels, and some sights, scale back or close between November and March, when snow can close roads into the higher valleys. If you are visiting outside the May–October season, confirm specific opening status with your hotel before travelling.
