The short answer
Best areas to stay in Prayagraj
- 01
Cantonment and Civil Lines
Best for: Centrally located stays with modern hotels and restaurants nearby
The most convenient area for travellers, close to museums, Anand Bhavan and good restaurants. Hotels range from budget to upscale. About 2–4 km from the main ghats, depending on which ghat. Traffic can be heavy on main roads.
- 02
Near Prayagraj Junction (Station Road)
Best for: Convenience if arriving by train
Close to the railway station but in a busier, noisier area. Useful if you plan to leave by train, but the old city and Sangam are still 2–3 km away.
- 03
Ghat area (Triveni Sangam approach)
Best for: Pilgrims and those seeking an immersive experience
Guesthouses and dharamshalas (pilgrimage hostels) abound here, offering very basic to simple rooms. The streets are narrow and crowded, especially at dawn and during festivals. Parking and vehicle access can be difficult. Best for those comfortable with pilgrimage-oriented hospitality.
- 04
Allahabad University area (Kydganj)
Best for: Budget-conscious travellers and those interested in the university
A quieter, university-oriented zone with budget hotels and a more local feel. Further from the main ghats but peaceful. Useful if you want to avoid the crowds of the Cantonment.
- 05
Shastri Bridge area
Best for: Those seeking river views and proximity to the Sangam
Close to the confluence and the bridge, with some newer hotels. Still developing, so fewer dining options than the Cantonment. Good for a quieter base with ghat access.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Prayagraj
- Visit the Sangam at dawn, before the heat and crowds. If you plan to bathe, wear sturdy shoes for the steep ghat steps, and bring helpers to support you on the uneven stone.
- Hire a car and driver for the full duration. Allahabad is hot and distances between sights are manageable by car but tiring on foot.
- Plan one major activity per morning (Sangam aarti, fort, or museum) and rest through the hottest hours (12 pm to 4 pm). Use late afternoons and early evenings for lighter activities.
- Temples and ghats have no lifts and involve steps or uneven ground. The Allahabad Museum, Anand Bhavan and Alfred Park are level and comfortable. Plan accordingly.
