Plan 01
1 day in Puri
- 01
Day 1: Temple gates, beach walk and evening bazaar
Arrive early and walk around the outer walls of the Jagannath Temple, visiting the Aruna Stambha (Sun Pillar) and the Singhadwara (Lion Gate) to see the sculptural detail, even if you cannot enter the shrine. Walk into the lanes north of the temple to see the old maths (monasteries) and note the temple kitchens. After mid-morning, head to Puri Beach for a walk along the shore and perhaps a swim or paddle. Have lunch at a local restaurant near the beach, then rest during the afternoon heat. In the late afternoon, return to the temple to see the evening lamp ritual if you can view it from outside, or visit the Gundicha Temple, the garden house of Jagannatha, about 3 km away. Finish with a walk through the evening bazaar near the Singhadwara.

Plan 02
2 days in Puri
- 01
Day 1: Temple complex and Gundicha Temple
Spend the early morning walking around the Jagannath Temple outer walls, the Aruna Stambha and the carved gateways. Visit the Puri District Museum to see local textiles and sculptures, then walk to the Gundicha Temple, the garden shrine where the triad images are carried during Ratha Yatra. Lunch at a roadside bhogi (rice and vegetable) stall or a simple restaurant. In the afternoon, rest or visit one of the sacred tanks (Indradyumna Tank or Rohini Kunda) for a quiet moment. In the evening, walk along the beach towards Swargadwar, the cremation ghat on the shore.
- 02
Day 2: Beach, crafts and a nearby temple
After a light breakfast, spend the morning at Puri Beach, watching fishing boats and sand artists if any are working. Visit a small sand art workshop or appliqué studio if you want to see the craft in action. Have lunch with fish curry or prawn dish if you eat seafood. In the afternoon, hire a car to visit the Lokanatya Mandap (if cultural performances are scheduled) or visit the Odisha Crafts Museum. Alternatively, take a short drive to Satapada (Brahmagiri) to see the Alarnath Temple, a pleasant village about 13 km away. Return to Puri for the evening; end with sweets at a local shop or tea and pakora by the beach.

Plan 03
3 days in Puri
- 01
Day 1: Jagannath Temple and outer rituals
Early morning walk around the temple fortifications and the Aruna Stambha. Enter the temple lanes and observe the everyday devotions and servitors' routines if possible. Visit the Puri District Museum. Lunch at a modest restaurant. Rest in the afternoon. In the late afternoon, visit the Indradyumna Tank or Rohini Kunda for a ritual bath (note: these are sacred sites; dress conservatively). In the evening, watch the lamps light up around the temple.
- 02
Day 2: Konark Sun Temple and beach return
Full day to the nearby Konark Sun Temple, roughly 35 km north of Puri, about 1 hour by car. The 13th-century black stone temple is an architectural marvel and a UNESCO site. Spend 2–3 hours exploring the carvings and the open-air museum. Stop for lunch in Konark or return to Puri for lunch. In the late afternoon, visit Chandrabhaga Beach near Konark if you have time, or return to Puri Beach for the sunset. Evening in the bazaar or quiet time by the beach.
- 03
Day 3: Chilika Lake day trip or local crafts and departure
Option A: Full day to Chilika Lake, India's largest brackish lagoon, roughly 1–1.5 hours from Puri by car. Boat ride through the lake to see migratory birds (in winter), dolphins, and small islands. Option B: If you prefer to stay in Puri, visit appliqué workshops in Pipili (en route to Bhubaneswar), about 30 minutes away, to see the stitching craft in action. Return to Puri for a final beach walk, shopping at the evening bazaar, and dinner with local sweets.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- Plan a visit outside June–July (Ratha Yatra season) unless you specifically want to experience the festival. The crowds are enormous and the heat intense.
- The temple outer courtyard and Gundicha Temple are flat and walkable; Swargadwar beach and the Indradyumna Tank involve minimal climbing.
- Hire a car and driver for the day rather than relying on autos. It gives you a cool place to rest between visits and flexibility for timing.
- Stay within walking distance of the temple or on Beach Road. Avoid the absolute temple-side lanes if your hotel has no lift; the narrow passages can be difficult with luggage.
- Book a hotel with good drainage; the monsoon months (June–September) bring flooding in low-lying areas and heavy humidity. November to February is ideal.
- The temple bells start at dawn and chanting continues until late. If you are a light sleeper, stay away from the temple lanes. Beach hotels are quieter.
