Plan 01

1 day in Pushkar

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake, temple and ghats

Arrive in the morning and walk around the lake's southern shore to the Brahma Temple, which usually sees fewer crowds before mid-morning. Spend 30–45 minutes inside, observing the red-spired sanctuary and the life-size idol. Walk back along the main bazaar (Choti Bazaar) and spend time at one of the busier ghats, such as Gau Ghat or Moti Ghat, to see pilgrims bathing and the temple bells echo. Have lunch at a simple vegetarian stall near the lake. In the late afternoon, walk to Savitri Temple if you have energy, either by climbing the steep path or by taking a jeep (or vehicle) up the hill. Return to the town at dusk for the evening aarti at one of the main ghats—usually around 6–7 pm—when priests wave oil lamps and the water reflects the temple lights. End with a walk through the bazaar and a simple dinner.

Plan 02

2 days in Pushkar

  1. 01

Day 1: Brahma Temple, lake and bazaar

Start at the Brahma Temple early, before the crowds. Spend an unhurried morning at the temple, then walk south around the lake, stopping at Gau Ghat and Varaha Ghat to observe the ritual life. Lunch at a local restaurant near the bazaar. Rest in the afternoon. In the late afternoon, explore the main bazaar lanes (Choti Bazaar and Main Bazaar) for textiles, mirrors, rose products and souvenirs. Sit by the lake at sunset. Attend the evening aarti at one of the main ghats.

  2. 02

Day 2: Savitri Temple and Ajmer

Spend the morning at Savitri Mata Mandir, either hiking the steep climb or taking a vehicle to the base, then walking the final steps. The view of the lake and town below is rewarding. Alternatively, take a tuk-tuk to Man Mahal, an old royal mansion with gardens overlooking the lake, or visit Saraswati Temple near the bazaar. In the afternoon, drive to Ajmer (30–45 minutes) to see the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, one of India's holiest Sufi shrines. Attend the evening prayers if timing allows, or simply walk through the shrine and its courtyards. Return to Pushkar by evening.

Plan 03

3 days in Pushkar

  1. 01

Day 1: Core temples and lake ritual

Dedicate the first morning to Brahma Temple and an extended walk around the southern and eastern shore of the lake, stopping at Gau Ghat, Varaha Ghat, Jaipur Ghat and Moti Ghat. Watch pilgrims bathe and priests perform pujas. Rest and have lunch. In the late afternoon, visit Saraswati Temple (a smaller, less crowded temple near the bazaar) and take a slow walk through the bazaar as it lights up for evening, enjoying the atmosphere and stopping for chai or a snack.

  2. 02

Day 2: Savitri Temple and Ajmer

After breakfast, take a vehicle or hike to Savitri Mata Mandir for the panoramic view and to experience the temple's spiritual energy. Return to Pushkar for lunch. In the early afternoon, drive to Ajmer to visit the Dargah, one of the world's holiest Sufi shrines. Spend time in the main courtyard, at the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, and if crowds allow, in the Inner Sanctum (shoes removed, modest dress). The shrine is active with prayer and devotion, especially on Thursdays and Fridays. Return to Pushkar by evening and attend the aarti.

  3. 03

Day 3: Mandir, ghats and rose gardens

Spend the morning at Man Mahal, the old royal guest house set on a hill overlooking the lake, to see how the royal families lived. Explore its Rajasthani architecture and gardens if accessible. Walk down to visit one of the quieter, smaller temples such as Badri Narayana Temple or Varaha Temple. Visit Pushkar's fragrant rose gardens or one of the rose oil shops in the bazaar (Pushkar is known for growing and exporting fine roses). Spend the afternoon resting and reflecting by the lake, or taking a gentle walk around the north shore. In the evening, attend the final aarti and, if you wish, visit the Guru Nanak Gurdwara or Gobind Ghat (sacred to Sikhs) for a quieter, less crowded spiritual moment.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • The main ghats involve many steps down to the water. Bring sturdy walking shoes, and do not attempt descent if unsteady. Many ghats offer views from the road above without needing to go down. A few ghats such as Gau Ghat have gentler approaches.
  • Temple floors are often marble or stone, which can be slippery when wet. Wear socks or bring cloth slippers, and hold the railings. Move slowly, especially after ritual bathing when the floors are wet.
  • The lake water is sacred but not always clean; pilgrims bathe in it as an act of faith, not for hygiene. Do not swim or submerge yourself unless you are prepared for the spiritual rather than physical consequences. Sitting by the water is reward enough.
  • Pushkar's pace is slow and spiritual. Avoid planning too many activities; allow time to sit, observe and rest. A rest after lunch is helpful, especially in hot months.
  • Choose a hotel near the bazaar or lake to avoid climbing hills to and from your room. If staying on a slope, ask about elevator access or risk tiring walks.
  • The town has basic medical facilities. Ajmer, 10 km away, has better hospitals. Keep copies of prescriptions, and bring any special medications from home. Pharmacies in the bazaar can fill simple prescriptions.
