Half day in Sanchi

   Morning: The Great Stupa and gateways

   Arrive early, ideally by 7:30 or 8 am. Walk uphill from the village (or take an auto part of the way) to the stupa. Spend time at each of the four stone gateways, walking around the main stupa and the railings. If you hire a guide, they will point out carved scenes of the Buddha's life and the Ashoka pillar. The site is generally quietest in the early morning. By noon, you can head to a café or restaurant in the bazaar, or return to Bhopal.

1 day in Sanchi

1. 01

   Day 1: Monuments and museums

   Arrive by morning train or car. Walk the site with a guide for two to three hours, visiting the Great Stupa, the four gateways and the smaller stupas (numbers 2 and 3) nearby. Visit the Sanchi Museum at the base to see carved fragments and smaller sculptures. After lunch at a local café, visit the Ashoka Pillar and the nearby temples. In the late afternoon, if you have energy, explore the Museum of Buddhist Art. Return to Bhopal or a nearby town for the night, or rest at a local guesthouse.

Sanchi with nearby Bhopal

   Day 1: Sanchi monuments

   Travel from Bhopal (45 minutes by road) in the early morning. Spend a full morning and early afternoon at the stupa and gateways with a guide, then visit the Sanchi Museum. Rest through the hottest hours. Late afternoon, return to Bhopal for dinner and an evening visit to the State Museum or a walk around Upper Lake.

2. 02

   Day 2: Bhopal and return

   Explore Bhopal's lakes, the Van Vihar National Park or the museums. Optional: if returning to Sanchi, visit Vidisha, about 10 km away, which has its own Buddhist sites and the medieval temples of Udayagiri. Depart Bhopal in the evening by train or car.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

• Heat: April to June regularly exceeds 40°C on the open, largely shadeless hilltop. Visit early morning or late afternoon in these months, carry more water than you think you need, and avoid the midday hours outdoors entirely.
• Getting around: Sanchi village, the railway station and the hilltop monuments are all within a couple of kilometres of each other, walkable for most visitors, with autos or cycle-rickshaws available for those who prefer not to walk uphill. Day trips to Udayagiri, Vidisha and Bhojpur need a car or auto, since there is no direct public transport link.
• Walking underfoot: The hilltop paths are paved and largely flat, but the walk up from the village is a steady incline. Wear sturdy, comfortable shoes rather than sandals, since some stone surfaces and day-trip sites (Udayagiri especially) have uneven ground.
• Money: Carry cash, particularly for the small stalls in the bazaar and for day-trip destinations, where card payment is unreliable. ATMs exist in Sanchi and Vidisha but are not always stocked or working, so withdraw what you need in Bhopal beforehand if possible.
• Dress and conduct: There is no strict dress code at the Buddhist monuments, but modest clothing is sensible, especially at the active Bhojeshwar Temple in Bhojpur, where visitors should dress conservatively and remove footwear at the sanctum.
• Closures and timings: The Sanchi Archaeological Museum is typically closed one day a week; the hilltop monuments are open daily during daylight hours. Confirm current timings and ticket prices before travelling, as these are revised periodically by the Archaeological Survey of India.
