The short answer
Best areas to stay in Sarnath
- 01
Near the Archaeological Park and temples (central Sarnath)
Best for: Travellers who want to be close to the main monuments and morning light over the Dhamek Stupa
A few small hotels and guesthouses are within walking distance of the monuments. Rooms are basic but sufficient. The trade-off is limited restaurant choice and basic facilities. Staying here gives you early access to the site before tour buses arrive.
- 02
Varanasi, south of the Ganges (Assi area or Godowlia area)
Best for: Travellers who want more dining and cultural options and do not mind a short drive to Sarnath
Most visitors stay in Varanasi and do a morning excursion to Sarnath. Hotels, cafes and restaurants are plentiful. It is about 10-15 km and 30-45 minutes by auto or shared taxi to Sarnath, depending on traffic and time of day.
- 03
Varanasi, north of the Ganges (Chowk area, near the ghats)
Best for: Travellers interested in both the Ganga Aarti evening ceremony and Sarnath pilgrimage
This is central Varanasi. It is busier and can be loud, especially in the evenings. Access to the ghats is on foot through narrow lanes. Sarnath is a 20-30-minute auto ride from here, depending on traffic.
- 04
Bodh Gaya (if combining the two sites)
Best for: Travellers with 2-3 days who want to see both Sarnath and Bodh Gaya
Bodh Gaya is about 4-5 hours by road from Sarnath and has many hotels and monasteries offering lodging. Staying in Bodh Gaya and doing a day trip to Sarnath, or vice versa, is feasible. The drive crosses the Ganges and enters Bihar state.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Sarnath
- The Archaeological Park's main paths are flat and even, but there is almost no shade. Start at opening time with a hat, sunscreen, water and comfortable walking shoes. An umbrella is useful against both sun and occasional rain.
- Consider hiring a car and driver or arranging a guide for the day. Sitting in a cool car between sites is worth the cost, especially if you have mobility concerns or tire easily in heat.
- The museum is air-conditioned and a good rest stop. Plan 45-60 minutes there and sit while reviewing the displays.
- Many of the Buddhist temples welcome visitors respectfully. Sit in the courtyards if you need to rest. Monks and volunteers may offer tea or water. Remove shoes when entering prayer halls.
