Best areas to stay in Spiti Valley

Kaza (the main village, 3,660 m)
Best for: The hub of your visit; most guesthouses and the only shops are here
The only settlement with basic facilities. Guesthouses are simple but clean, with shared or attached bathrooms and electric heating. Water supply can be intermittent. This is where you should plan your acclimatisation and book jeeps. Meals are vegetarian momos and thukpa; prepare for repetition and lack of choice.

Tabo village (south of Kaza, 3,200 m, slightly lower)
Best for: Accessing Tabo Monastery and the lower southern valley; slightly easier altitude than Kaza
A small settlement with a few guesthouses very close to the famous monastery. Quieter and lower than Kaza, making it suitable for a second night if you want a gentler pace. Very limited facilities; few shops and a slower pace than Kaza.

Kibber (extreme northeast, 4,200+ m, the highest inhabited village in India)
Best for: High-altitude enthusiasts and photographers seeking traditional stone houses and very remote village life
Only for the very fit and well-acclimatised. The road is extremely rough and narrow; a 4WD jeep is essential, and the journey itself takes 2–3 hours from Kaza. Guesthouses are very basic; power and water are spotty. Best as a day trip from Kaza rather than an overnight stay unless you are very hardy.

Langza (northeast of Kaza, 4,000+ m, with fossil museum)
Best for: Photography and geological interest; a quieter base than Kaza for a night
A small village with a few guesthouses and the famous fossil museum. The road is rough but slightly better than to Kibber. The high altitude and sparse facilities make it more suitable as a day trip from Kaza for most older travellers, though a night here is possible for the fit and acclimatised.

Dhankar (above the Spiti River gorge, between Kaza and Tabo)
Best for: Fort and monastery enthusiasts; a brief stop during a valley tour
No formal guesthouses; essentially a day-trip stop to see the dramatic cliff-hanging fort-monastery complex. The setting is spectacular but exposure is high and there are no safety railings.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
For parents and senior travellers
Comfort notes for Spiti Valley
- Do not rush to high altitude. Plan 2–3 days of very gentle activity in Kaza before visiting higher villages like Kibber or Langza. Altitude sickness can be serious at 3,600+ metres.
- Consult a doctor in your home country about high-altitude exposure before travelling. Some conditions (heart, blood pressure, recent surgery) may make Spiti inadvisable.
- Drink water constantly, even if you do not feel thirsty. Altitude dehydration is real and makes altitude sickness worse. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals in your first few days.
- Hire a private jeep and driver for the duration; do not rely on public buses. Driving is slow, rough and unpredictable, and a personal vehicle gives you rest breaks.
