The short answer
Best areas to stay in Tawang
- 01
Central Tawang (near the monastery)
Best for: Pilgrims and those focused on the monastery
Walking distance to the Tawang Monastery and the town market. Hotels here are modest and book early, especially in peak months. They are family-run and cater to pilgrims. Expect basic but clean rooms without frills. Check for heating in winter, as nights are cold at 10,000 feet.
- 02
Upper Tawang (near Gorsam Chorten)
Best for: Those seeking quiet and views over the valley
Several guesthouses and small hotels sit on the edges above the town, with views towards the monastery and valley. A 10-15 minute walk uphill from the bazaar. Cooler and quieter, but you are farther from shops and services.
- 03
Tawang Bazaar area
Best for: Easy access to food, shops and transport
The main commercial area with most of the town's restaurants, small hotels and the market. Noisier than other areas, but practical if you prefer not to walk far for meals.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Tawang
- Do not travel to Tawang without first checking with a doctor about altitude safety, especially for anyone over 65 or with a history of heart, lung, blood-pressure or blood-sugar concerns.
- Plan your first full day as acclimatisation only. Spend the afternoon resting at your hotel, drinking water, and taking a short, gentle walk. Ascend slowly: altitude sickness hits quickly at 10,000 feet.
- Hire a car and driver from Guwahati rather than driving yourself. The roads are dramatic mountain passes, poorly lit at night, and the drive is 14–16 hours one way. A professional driver makes the journey safer and leaves you free to rest.
- Choose a hotel with a lift (elevator) if you have mobility concerns, or ask for a ground-floor room. Many guesthouses are converted homes with stairs.
