Day 1: The Big Temple and palace
Arrive early at the Brihadeeswarar Temple (also called the Big Temple) and spend two hours exploring the outer courts, the inner sanctum and the treasury. The Nandi statue is extraordinary and the gopuram view from the courtyard shifts with the light. If your knees are comfortable, climb the narrow stairs to see the cupola and the gold-covered top, or stay below—the exterior is grand enough. Rest for an hour at your hotel or a café. In the late afternoon, visit Tanjore Palace and the Saraswathi Mahal Library next door; the library is small, calm and powerful. Finish with an evening walk near the temple, when the light turns golden.

Day 1: The Big Temple and the palace
Start early at the Brihadeeswarar Temple for the courtyard, the Nandi and the inner sanctum. Take an hour to rest and have breakfast at a local tiffin shop—idli, dosa and sambar are excellent here. After midday rest, visit Tanjore Palace, the Saraswathi Mahal Library and the Art Gallery to see bronze sculptures from the Chola period. Finish the day with a slow walk through the narrow streets around the temple.

Day 2: Temples in nearby villages and the afternoon light
Drive to nearby villages to see smaller Chola temples: Gangaikonda Cholapuram is roughly 30 km away and has a temple almost as grand as the Big Temple, or visit Kumbakonam (about 40 km) which has the Mahamaham tank and temples. Return by late afternoon and spend the evening in the main temple area as the sun sets, casting long shadows across the stonework.

3 days in Thanjavur
- 01
Day 1: The Big Temple deep dive
Dedicate the whole morning to the Brihadeeswarar Temple. Hire a guide or use your hotel's contact to understand the sculpture, the inscriptions and the Chola-period detail. Visit the treasury chamber, see the oil lamps and the brass work. Take a long, leisurely lunch at a restaurant serving local cuisine—crab curry, fish in tamarind, and rice are local strengths. In the late afternoon, walk through the Krishna Temple area and around Sivaganga Tank.
- 02
Day 2: Palaces, libraries and art
Visit the Tanjore Palace in the morning, seeing the durbar hall and royal rooms. Move to the Saraswathi Mahal Library next door—ask to see the Chola manuscripts if possible. In the afternoon, visit the Tanjore Art Gallery and the Government Museum to see bronze sculptures and Chola period bronzes. Stop at a Tanjore painting workshop to watch artisans at work and understand the gold-leaf technique.

Day 3: Day trip to Gangaikonda Cholapuram or Kumbakonam
Drive 30 km to Gangaikonda Cholapuram and spend the morning at the Brihadisvara Temple there, which rivals the main temple in ambition. See the tank and the smaller shrines. Alternatively, drive to Kumbakonam (40 km), visit the Mahamaham tank, the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple and the Nageswarar Temple, and browse the silks and bronze shops for which the town is famous. Return to Thanjavur by late afternoon.

Make the plan work for everyone
- Heat management matters more than distance: Thanjavur's temples and palace involve walking on open stone with limited shade. Plan sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon, and rest indoors, at the Saraswathi Mahal Library, the art gallery or a hotel, through the hottest midday hours.
- Hire a car and driver for day trips: Gangaikonda Cholapuram, Darasuram and Swamimalai are all 30–70 km away with no direct public transport aimed at visitors. A car and driver for the day is the practical way to see them comfortably, especially for older travellers.
- Footwear comes off at every temple: Brihadeeswarar Temple, Punnainallur Mariamman Temple and the day-trip temples all require bare feet at the sanctum approach. Carry socks if bare stone in direct sun is uncomfortable, and expect a short barefoot walk at each site.
- Combine the palace complex in one visit: The Thanjavur Maratha Palace, Saraswathi Mahal Library and Thanjavur Art Gallery sit inside the same complex and are often covered by one ticket. Plan them together rather than as separate outings.
- Dress modestly at temples and the church: Cover shoulders and knees at Brihadeeswarar Temple, Punnainallur Mariamman Temple and Schwartz Church. This is a working pilgrimage town, not primarily a tourist destination, and dress standards are taken seriously.
- Sundays and festival dates bring crowds: Punnainallur Mariamman Temple in particular gets busy on Sundays and very busy during its annual festival. If you prefer a quieter visit, aim for a weekday morning instead.
