1 day at Tso Moriri

   Day 1: Lake, monastery and plateau silence

   Arrive early morning if possible, having acclimatised at Leh the day before. Stop at the first viewpoint to absorb the scale of the lake and the surrounding plateau. Drive to Korzok village and visit the Korzok Monastery if the monks allow visitors; dress respectfully and remove shoes inside. Spend the afternoon sitting by the lake shore near the village, watching for birds—Bar-headed geese, Brahminy ducks, and Tibetan wild asses are common in summer. Have a simple meal at a local guesthouse and rest in the afternoon heat or cold, depending on the season. In the late afternoon, find a quiet spot for sunset over the water, then return to your accommodation.

2 days at Tso Moriri

1. 01

   Day 1: The lake and Korzok Monastery

   Arrive from Leh early morning. Stop at a high point to appreciate the plateau's scale. Drive to Korzok village and spend time at the Korzok Monastery; if photography is permitted, ask first. Walk along the northern lake shore looking for wildlife. Return to your guesthouse by evening. Have supper and rest.

   Day 2: Plateau exploration and bird watching

   Start before dawn for bird watching along the lake shore; bring binoculars and a field guide. The morning light is also best for photographs. Visit the eastern shore of the lake if the road allows, or walk across the plateau and watch for wild asses, marmots and pikas. Spend the afternoon visiting local families in Korzok if invited, or exploring the valley south of the lake. Before leaving, collect water from the lake if you have bottles, and purchase any local crafts from Korzok as a direct support to the village.

3 days at Tso Moriri

1. 01

   Day 1: Arrival and the lake

   Arrive from Leh early. Stop at viewpoints and spend the afternoon acclimatising by the lake. Visit Korzok Monastery in the late afternoon when light is soft. Dinner and rest.

2. 02

   Day 2: Wildlife and plateau walks

   Pre-dawn bird watching session. After breakfast, take a slow walk across the plateau to look for wild asses, pikas and other high-altitude wildlife. Visit Korzok village, meet local residents if possible, and have a simple lunch. In the afternoon, visit nearby Mahe village or explore a valley floor if your driver knows safe routes. Return for sunset by the lake.

3. 03

   Day 3: Tso Kar or departure

   Either drive south early to Tso Kar, another high-altitude lake surrounded by salt marshes and slightly warmer than Tso Moriri, spending the day there and returning to Leh the same evening; or spend the morning doing final walks and meditation by the lake before heading back to Leh.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

• Altitude comes first: At 4,500+ metres, acclimatisation matters more than fitness. Spend at least one full day in Leh before continuing, and consider breaking the drive at a lower point such as Chumathang.
• There is no quick way out: The nearest hospital is in Leh, six to eight hours away. Discuss any heart, lung or blood pressure conditions with your doctor before travelling, and carry any prescribed altitude medication.
• Getting around means one vehicle, one driver: There is no public transport on the Changthang plateau. Book an experienced driver and a sturdy SUV or jeep in Leh; sedans struggle on the rougher stretches.
• Cash and supplies come from Leh: Korzok and the villages beyond have very limited shops. Withdraw cash and buy any snacks, medication or extra layers before leaving Leh.
• Cold is real even in summer: Nights drop close to freezing even in July and August, and wind off the lakes is constant. Pack proper down or fleece layers, not just a light jacket.
• Dress modestly at Korzok Monastery: Remove shoes before entering the prayer hall and dress modestly. Ask before photographing monks or interiors, and accept that the monastery may be closed if a ceremony is underway.
