Plan 01

1 day in Udaipur

  1. 01

Day 1: Lakes, Palace and old bazaars

Start with an early boat ride on Lake Pichola, leaving from the main ghat near the City Palace. Aim for the 7 am slot if possible to catch the light on the palace and Lake Palace island. Return by 9 am and have breakfast at a lakeside café. Spend the late morning walking through the City Palace's accessible courtyards and galleries (entry fee; check the current rate). Have lunch at a restaurant overlooking the lake. In the afternoon, walk slowly through the old city bazaars near Jagdish Temple—Bapu Bazaar and the lanes around it—pausing for chai at a corner shop. In the evening, return to the lakefront for sunset, or climb Mata Pratap Ghat for the city lights. Finish with dinner at a rooftop restaurant overlooking Pichola.

Plan 02

2 days in Udaipur

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake Pichola and City Palace

Begin with an early boat ride on Lake Pichola (7–8 am departure), passing the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir before returning for breakfast. Visit the City Palace's courtyards, gardens and the small museum of textiles and art on the top floor. Have lunch at a rooftop café. In the afternoon, visit the Jagdish Temple, a five-storey stone temple near the palace, and explore the old bazaar lanes around it, stopping for a mirchi vada or sweet at a local vendor. End the evening at the waterfront, watching the light fade over the hills.

  2. 02

Day 2: Temples, Fateh Sagar and a slower pace

Begin the morning at the Ambrai Ghat or Gangaur Ghat, the two main ghats, where locals gather for washing and prayer. Walk towards the Neemach Mata Temple or visit Pala Ganesh Temple, smaller and less crowded than Jagdish. Have a leisurely lunch in the old city or near the lake. In the afternoon, take an auto or car to Fateh Sagar Lake, north of the city, where you can walk along the banks or sit on a bench watching the hills. If energy allows, visit Saheliyon ki Bari (Gardens of the Maidens), a small formal garden near Fateh Sagar with fountains and pavilions. Return to the city for an evening walk through quieter lanes and a light dinner.

Plan 03

3 days in Udaipur

  1. 01

Day 1: Lake Pichola and the waterfront

Early boat ride on Lake Pichola (aim for 7 am). Visit the City Palace courtyards and museum. Have lunch at the lakefront. Explore the bazaar lanes near Jagdish Temple, pausing for chai or a sweet. End with sunset at the water's edge.

  2. 02

Day 2: Temples and Fateh Sagar Lake

Morning at the Ambrai Ghat or Gangaur Ghat. Visit Neemach Mata Temple or Pala Ganesh Temple. Leisurely lunch in the old city. Afternoon at Fateh Sagar Lake and Saheliyon ki Bari if time allows. Evening walk through quiet bazaars.

  3. 03

Day 3: A day excursion to Haldi Ghati or Ahar Cenotaphs

Drive west to Haldi Ghati, the historic mountain pass where Maharana Pratap made his stand against the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1576, roughly one hour by road. The small museum and viewpoint here offer views across the valley and insights into Mewar's resistance. Alternatively, drive east to Ahar, where the ancient cenotaphs of Mewar's rulers stand in a line along a dry riverbed—a peaceful, less visited spot that speaks to the kingdom's long history. Return to Udaipur by late afternoon, with time for a final lakeside evening and dinner.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Book a hotel with lake views or near the waterfront. The lake is Udaipur's heart, and the evening and morning light are one of the main pleasures.
  • The old city bazaar lanes are steep and narrow; if mobility is a concern, base yourself north of the old city, near Fateh Sagar, and take a car or auto to sights.
  • The City Palace is accessible from the courtyard without a paid ticket. If your parents have mobility concerns, a view from outside and a boat ride on the lake may be enough.
  • Hire a car and driver for the day if you want to visit Haldi Ghati or Ahar Cenotaphs. The drive is scenic and the driver can choose rest stops.
  • Plan an afternoon rest, especially in April to June. Udaipur's weather is gentler than Jaipur's, but midday heat is still present.
  • The lakefront walks in the early morning or late evening are calm and flat. Save these times for a slow pace, and use the hot afternoon for museums, shopping, or rest.
