The short answer
Best areas to stay in Udupi
- 01
Temple heart (within 500 m of Sri Krishna Matha)
Best for: Pilgrims and those wanting to attend multiple temple visits and rituals
Puts you in the thick of temple activity and pilgrimage culture. Accommodation is mostly simple guesthouses and lodges run by the matha or private owners. Expect noise, early mornings and crowds, especially during festivals. Good for an immersive experience; less suitable for quiet evenings.
- 02
Town centre (near the main bazaar and bus stand)
Best for: Families and travellers wanting a balance of access to temples and local amenities
Central, with easy access to shops, restaurants and auto-rickshaws. Hotels range from basic to mid-range. A practical choice that avoids the temple lane crowds while staying close enough for early-morning visits.
- 03
Malpe (6 km west, near the beach)
Best for: Travellers wanting to split time between temple and coast
A fishing village with a small sandy beach, boat services to St. Mary's Islands, and several beachside shacks and a few small hotels. Quieter than town, but a 15–20 minute drive or auto ride from the main temple. Good if you want to experience the coast and return to the temple on a second day.
- 04
Manipal (15 km north, a planned academic town)
Best for: Travellers seeking modern amenities and planned infrastructure
Home to Manipal Academy (MIT and medical colleges), with larger hotels, hospitals, and a planned layout. Less traditional than Udupi proper, but easier for those with mobility concerns. A 20–30 minute drive to the temple.
- 05
Kaup (15 km north along the coast)
Best for: Nature lovers and those interested in a quieter beach village
A small coastal settlement with its own beach and a historic lighthouse. More isolated than Malpe, but offers a slower pace and is convenient if you are also planning to explore the northern coast towards Kundapur or Byndoor.

Before you book
What to check when booking for older travellers
- Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
- Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
- Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
- Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
- Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

Comfort notes for Udupi
- The Sri Krishna Temple is level inside the sanctum, but the main gateway and some subsidiary passages have steps. Ask the temple staff about the Kankana kindi entry or alternative routes; they are familiar with elderly visitors.
- Queues at the main temple can be long, especially at 10 a.m.–12 p.m., 4 p.m.–6 p.m., and during festival seasons. Arrive very early (5–6 a.m.) on weekdays to avoid crowds, or hire a guide who may know less-crowded times.
- The town gets very hot from April to June. Carry water, wear light clothes, and plan an indoor rest during the hottest hours (12 p.m.–4 p.m.).
- Malpe Beach and the boat ride to St. Mary's Islands are generally easy, but the boat can be rough if the sea is choppy. Consult the boatmen about conditions on the day you plan to go; an alternative is to walk the beach without the island trip.
