Plan 01
1 day in Ujjain
- 01
Day 1: Pre-dawn aarti and temples
Wake well before dawn and head to Mahakaleshwar Temple (roughly 4:00–4:30 a.m.) to witness the Bhasma Aarti, the ash-smearing ceremony that is Ujjain's signature ritual. Expect crowds and a queue lasting 1–2 hours; the ritual itself is brief but profound. After the aarti, rest at your hotel for a few hours. In the late morning, visit Harsidhhi Temple, a short walk away, which is less crowded and houses an important Devi shrine. Have lunch at a local restaurant serving thali. In the afternoon, walk down to the Shipra Ghats, particularly Ram Ghat and Triveni Ghat, to see pilgrims bathing and offerings being made. End the day at Mangalnath Temple, a smaller shrine on the river, for an unhurried evening visit and sunset.

Day 1: The Bhasma Aarti and early temples
Wake before 4 a.m. and proceed to Mahakaleshwar Temple for the Bhasma Aarti; allow 2–3 hours from arrival to completion. After the ritual, return to your hotel and rest through the morning. In the late morning, visit Chintaman Ganesh Temple, believed to be one of the oldest shrines dedicated to Ganesh. Have lunch at a traditional restaurant. In the afternoon, walk down to the Shipra Ghats, starting at Ram Ghat and moving to Triveni Ghat where pilgrims gather. Spend time watching rituals and observing the river life. As the sun begins to set, visit Mangalnath Temple on the opposite bank for a quieter evening.

Day 2: Temples and museums
Start the morning with a visit to the Vedha Shala, an 18th-century astronomical observation site with historical instruments and a view of the city. Then explore the Triveni Museum in a haveli near the ghats, which houses sculptures and artefacts from the region's long history. Have a long, unhurried lunch. In the afternoon, visit Kaal Bhairav Temple, a smaller shrine with local significance, or walk through the bazaar near Mahakaleshwar Temple to buy temple flowers, incense and local sweets. Spend the evening at the ghats for the evening aarti (worship ceremony), when lights illuminate the riverside and pilgrims gather for evening prayers.

Pacing
Make the plan work for everyone
- The Bhasma Aarti requires a 1–2 hour pre-dawn queue in a crowded temple. Many seniors attend despite discomfort for the spiritual experience, supported by family; plan for rest afterwards.
- Temples have stairs, uneven floors and require removing footwear; use lifts where available and consider visiting quieter temples like Harsidhhi Temple and Mangalnath to avoid peak crowds.
- Hire a car and driver for the full day rather than walking between temples. It provides a cool rest space and avoids long walks in heat and crowded lanes.
- Stay close to Mahakaleshwar Temple (Old City) or Freeganj to minimize walking. Choose a hotel with a lift, close parking and easy access.
- Plan one major temple in the morning, a substantial rest after lunch, and a gentle evening walk to the ghats. Ujjain's heat is intense even in cooler months.
- Carry water, a hat, sunscreen and socks for temple floors, which are often uneven and very hot in afternoon. Keep medications and a copy of prescriptions with you.
