Why Chunar Fort is worth your time
Chunar has been fought over for centuries because of its commanding position on the Ganga. It is closely associated with Sher Shah Suri, who held it in the 16th century, and it later passed to the Mughals, the Nawabs of Awadh and the British. Many legends connect it with the ancient king Bhartrihari, and with Vikramaditya.
The fort also gives its name to Chunar sandstone, the fine stone quarried in the area for more than two thousand years. Tradition and scholarship link it to the polished Ashokan pillars, including the one that carried the Lion Capital now in the Sarnath Museum. A visit to Chunar and Sarnath together connects the stone to its most famous use.

How to experience it
Leave Varanasi after breakfast. The drive takes roughly 1–1.5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. The fort sits on a sandstone spur where the Ganga bends, and the first view of its walls from the approach is one of the best moments of the trip.
Walk along the ramparts for sweeping views of the river and the countryside. Look for the Sonwa Mandap pavilion, the shrine associated with the sage-king Bhartrihari, and the remnants of British-era buildings. There are local guides who can explain the fort's many layers of history. Agree a fee first.
Carry water, snacks and sun protection, as facilities are limited. It pairs well with Ramnagar Fort on the way back, or with Vindhyachal for pilgrims on a longer day, though that makes for a lot of time in the car with seniors.
