The short answer

Best areas to stay in Varanasi

  1. 01

Ghat-side heritage stays (Dashashwamedh to Assi riverfront)

Best for: River views, sunrise from the room, atmosphere

Beautiful, but many of these converted havelis can only be reached through lanes too narrow for cars, and some involve steep ghat steps or several floors without a lift. Before booking with parents, ask how far the nearest road is, whether they provide porters or an e-rickshaw transfer, and whether there is a lift.

  2. 02

    Assi and Shivala

Best for: Calmer evenings, cafés, easy access to BHU and southern temples

The best compromise for many families. Cars and e-rickshaws can reach the top of Assi Ghat, the plaza is wide, and the area is quieter than Godowlia. It is a boat ride or a slow drive to Dashashwamedh for the main aarti.

  3. 03

    Godowlia and Dashashwamedh

Best for: Walking to the evening aarti, Kashi Vishwanath and the old bazaars

The most central area, but also the most crowded. Vehicles are often stopped at barricades on the main road at peak times, so you may have to walk the last stretch. Choose a hotel on the main road rather than inside the lanes if mobility is a concern.

  4. 04

    Cantonment

Best for: Larger hotels, lifts, parking, quick station and airport access

Wide roads and conventional hotels with lifts and ramps make this the most comfortable base for seniors or wheelchair users. The ghats are a drive away that can be slow in evening traffic, so plan one outing at a time.

  5. 05

    Sarnath

Best for: Quiet, green surroundings, Buddhist sites, early nights

Peaceful and level, with easy vehicle access. The downside is the drive into the old city for the aarti and temples. It suits a slower trip or travellers who find central Varanasi overwhelming.

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.

For parents and senior travellers

Comfort notes for Varanasi

  • Choose your hotel for vehicle access first and river views second. Ask exactly where the car stops and how many steps or metres lie between it and the room.
  • See the ghats from a boat rather than walking the full length. A rowing boat is gentler, but for a long stretch or elderly passengers a motor boat with proper seating is easier. Ask for life jackets.
  • Go for Kashi Vishwanath darshan on a weekday outside festival periods. Check the official temple trust site for current rules on phones and bags, and for any sugam darshan or senior-citizen arrangements, because these change.
  • Avoid the Dashashwamedh aarti crowd on festival evenings such as Dev Deepawali, and on Mondays in Shravan. The crush on the steps can be dangerous. Watch from a booked boat or from Assi instead.
