Karnataka packs three quite different trips into one state. Mysuru gives you a royal palace, Chamundi Hill and an easy, well-kept city. Hampi is a vast landscape of Vijayanagara temples and boulders, one of India's most striking heritage sites. Coorg and Chikmagalur offer cool coffee-estate stays, and the coast from Mangaluru to Udupi and Gokarna adds temple towns, beaches and some of the best seafood and vegetarian cooking in the south.

The honest catch is geography. Hampi sits far to the north of the Mysuru–Coorg–coast loop, roughly six to seven hours by road from Bengaluru, so trying to fit everything into one trip means long drives. The Western Ghat roads to Coorg, Chikmagalur and the coast are winding and slow, and heavy monsoon rain from June to September can close viewpoints and make surfaces slippery. Hampi is very hot from March to May and involves uneven ground and sun exposure across a spread-out site.

For most families the best plan is to choose one arc: Hampi on its own by overnight train, or the southern loop of Mysuru, Coorg, Chikmagalur and the coast. The southern loop is especially good for seniors: plantation homestays are quiet, Mysuru is flat and orderly, and the coastal temple towns are compact. Hampi rewards parents who are comfortable walking but needs careful pacing, a good driver and early starts.

Best season
October to February is the most comfortable across the state, with cool mornings in Coorg and Chikmagalur. Mysuru's Dasara (usually September or October) is spectacular but crowded. Avoid Hampi from about March to May because of heat, and expect heavy rain in Coorg and on the coast from June to September.

Suggested routes

Bengaluru and Hampi in 5 days
  1. Day 1 — Bengaluru. Arrive and rest. In the late afternoon, an easy walk in Lalbagh Botanical Garden or a visit to Bangalore Palace, then dinner and an overnight train to Hosapete if the timing suits, or a night in Bengaluru and an early start.
  2. Day 2 — Hampi. Arrive and check in close to Hampi or Hosapete. After breakfast and a rest, see the Virupaksha Temple and the bazaar street, then return for lunch and a long break. Watch sunset from a low vantage point such as the area near Hemakuta Hill, choosing a spot that does not need a steep climb.
  3. Day 3 — Hampi. Start early for the Vittala Temple and its stone chariot, using the battery vehicles where they run to shorten the walk. Back to the hotel by late morning. In the late afternoon, see the Lotus Mahal and Elephant Stables in the Royal Centre, which are flatter and easier on the legs.
  4. Day 4 — Hampi. A flexible morning for any sites missed, or a gentle coracle ride on the Tungabhadra if water levels allow. Afternoon rest, then the overnight train or a long drive back toward Bengaluru.
  5. Day 5 — Bengaluru. Arrive, freshen up and keep the day unhurried: a South Indian breakfast in Basavanagudi or Malleshwaram, some shopping for silk, and a flight home.
Palace, coffee country and coast in 11 days
  1. Day 1 — Bengaluru. Arrive and rest. A short evening outing to Lalbagh or a relaxed dinner is enough on the first day.
  2. Day 2 — Mysuru. Drive about 2.5–3 hours on the expressway, with an optional stop at Srirangapatna. Check in, rest, and see Mysuru Palace in the late afternoon; ask locally about the evenings when it is illuminated.
  3. Day 3 — Mysuru. Drive up Chamundi Hill in the morning for the temple and the view, then the Devaraja Market or a sandalwood and silk shop. Rest after lunch and visit Brindavan Gardens only if everyone still has energy.
  4. Day 4 — Coorg. Drive about 3 hours to a coffee-estate homestay, perhaps stopping at the Namdroling Monastery at Bylakuppe on the way. Afternoon on the veranda, with an early dinner.
  5. Day 5 — Coorg. A gentle plantation walk with the host, followed by Raja's Seat in Madikeri in the evening. Abbey Falls involves steps; skip it if knees are a concern.
  6. Day 6 — Chikmagalur. A longer road day of around 4 hours. Settle into an estate stay and rest; the drive itself passes through coffee and pepper country.
  7. Day 7 — Chikmagalur. Half-day to the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu, about an hour away, starting early. Return for lunch and a restful afternoon among the coffee.
  8. Day 8 — Udupi. Drive 3.5–4 hours down the ghats to the coast. Rest, then an evening visit to the Sri Krishna Matha, where the lamps and chanting are atmospheric; check dress rules at the entrance.
  9. Day 9 — Udupi. Morning at Malpe beach while it is cool, and a traditional Udupi vegetarian lunch. Keep the afternoon free, then a quiet evening near the temple.
  10. Day 10 — Mangaluru. Drive about 1.5 hours. Visit the Kadri Manjunath Temple or St Aloysius Chapel in the morning, rest, and end the day with a coastal seafood dinner or a stroll on Panambur beach at sunset.
  11. Day 11 — Mangaluru. A slow breakfast, some shopping for cashews and spices, and a flight home from Mangaluru, or a train back toward Bengaluru.

Getting around

How long to plan: 4–5 days for Hampi or for Bengaluru–Mysuru–Coorg alone; 10–12 days for the southern loop with coffee country and the coast. Adding Hampi to the loop needs two weeks or more.

Bengaluru is the main airport; Mangaluru has a domestic airport that works well as an exit after the coast, and Mysuru and the Hampi area have smaller airports with limited flights. Hampi is usually reached by overnight train to Hosapete, about 20–30 minutes away by road, or by a long day's drive from Bengaluru. A car with driver suits the southern loop: roughly 2.5–3 hours Bengaluru to Mysuru, about 3 hours Mysuru to Coorg, around 4 hours Coorg to Chikmagalur, 3.5–4 hours Chikmagalur to Udupi over the ghats, and about 1.5 hours Udupi to Mangaluru. Gokarna is a further 3.5–4 hours north of Udupi.

Travelling with parents

  • Treat Hampi and the Mysuru–Coorg–coast loop as separate trips unless you have two weeks; the drive between them is long and tiring.
  • At Hampi, go out at first light and be back indoors by late morning; carry water, hats and an umbrella for shade, and avoid boulder climbs.
  • Ghat roads to Coorg, Chikmagalur and the coast are winding; carry motion-sickness remedies and plan fewer, longer stays rather than one-night hops.
  • Choose estate homestays with ground-floor rooms and good road access, as some plantations are reached by steep, rough tracks.
  • Some coastal temples ask men to remove shirts and vests before entering the inner area; loose clothing makes this easier.
  • Monsoon rain from June to September makes steps and estate paths slippery; good-grip footwear matters more than usual.

Karnataka Heritage & Coast FAQs

Can we combine Hampi with Mysuru and Coorg in one week?

Not comfortably. Hampi is roughly six to seven hours north of Bengaluru, while Mysuru and Coorg lie to the south-west. In a week, pick one: Hampi by overnight train, or Bengaluru, Mysuru and Coorg.

Is Hampi suitable for elderly parents?

Yes, with pacing. The main temples and Royal Centre are on fairly level ground, and battery vehicles have operated near the Vittala Temple. Avoid steep boulder viewpoints and the hot months, and plan two short outings a day rather than one long one.

Is Coorg or Chikmagalur better for a relaxed stay?

Both suit a slow estate stay. Coorg is closer to Mysuru and has more established homestays; Chikmagalur puts you within reach of the Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu. Many families pick one to save a road day.

Where does Gokarna fit in?

Gokarna is a temple town with beaches, 3.5–4 hours north of Udupi. It also works as an add-on to a Goa trip, so choose whichever direction fits your route better.

What is the best time to visit Karnataka with seniors?

October to February is the most comfortable period. Hampi is very hot from March to May, and the ghats and coast get heavy rain from June to September.

Do we need to book the Mysuru Dasara in advance?

Hotels in Mysuru fill quickly during Dasara, usually in September or October, so book early. Crowds are very large at the main events, so seniors may prefer to see the illuminated palace on a quieter evening.
