Vijayawada International Airport (VGA) is the nearest airport, about 30–45 minutes by road, traffic dependent. A new greenfield airport is planned within Amaravati itself but remains at the planning stage.
How to reach Amaravati by train
Amaravati's own railway station is still being developed. The nearest working stations are Vijayawada Junction, Guntur Junction and Krishna Canal Junction (Tadepalli), all roughly 30–45 minutes away by road.
How to reach Amaravati by road
Amaravati sits between Vijayawada and Guntur on developing highway links including NH-16 and the under-construction Bengaluru–Vijayawada Expressway. APSRTC buses connect Amaravati with Vijayawada, Guntur and Tenali.
Getting around Amaravati
A private car and driver is best for day trips to the stupa and caves; auto-rickshaws and app cabs cover shorter trips within the immediate area.
For parents and senior travellers
Easy transfers to and in Amaravati
- Book your car and driver for the entire day. Driving yourself in traffic is stressful; a hired car lets you rest between sights and avoids the heat of waiting for transport.
- Undavalli Caves and the Amaravati Stupa both involve climbing and uneven ground. Ask your driver to help, use handrails where available, and carry water and a hat. Stop halfway if needed.
- Many temples require you to remove footwear on hot stone floors. Wear socks and carry water-resistant sandals that slip off easily. Marble temple floors can cause burns on bare feet in midday sun.
- Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
- Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
- Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
