Plan 01

1 day in Amritsar

  1. 01

Day 1: Temple, bazaar and langar

Enter the Golden Temple at first light, walk around the sacred pool and sit for the langar. Spend 2–3 hours here. Walk to nearby Jallianwala Bagh and learn its history; it is quieter in mid-morning. Return for lunch at a bazaar dhaba or langar, then rest indoors during the hottest hours. In the late afternoon, visit the old bazaars (Chhota Bazaar or Hall Bazaar) for shopping and street food, or take a taxi to Wagah Border to see the border closing ceremony if time allows.

Plan 02

2 days in Amritsar

  1. 01

Day 1: Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh

Arrive at the Golden Temple at first light, walk the circumference of the sacred pool, attend the langar and spend time inside the sanctum. This will take 2–3 hours. Walk to nearby Jallianwala Bagh in late morning, explore the memorials and bullet marks, and sit in the garden. Have lunch at a bazaar restaurant or street stall in Hall Bazaar or Chhota Bazaar. Rest during the afternoon heat. In the early evening, walk through the old city's narrow lanes for shopping and local sweets such as lassi at a traditional counter, then dine on Punjabi fare.

  2. 02

Day 2: Wagah Border, Akal Takht and Ram Bagh

Hire a taxi early and drive to Wagah Border (20 km south) to watch the border closing ceremony, which is held twice daily (afternoon is usually less crowded). Witness the high-energy parade of soldiers, flags and crowd energy. Return to Amritsar and visit the Akal Takht (seat of temporal authority in Sikhism) and the surrounding Golden Temple complex if you wish to see another angle. In the afternoon, walk or taxi to Ram Bagh (a British-era garden with a museum), which is shaded and comfortable. Finish with a sunset visit to a rooftop café or a walk along the temple's edge in the evening light.

Plan 03

3 days in Amritsar

  1. 01

Day 1: Golden Temple, langar and Jallianwala Bagh

Arrive early at the Golden Temple, walk the marble pathways, sit in the langar and spend time in meditation or observation. Leave around 10 a.m. and walk or taxi to Jallianwala Bagh. Spend an hour there learning its history, then walk back to the old bazaar for lunch at a dhaba or rooftop restaurant. Rest during the afternoon. In the late evening, return to the temple area to watch the evening aarti and light the temple in the darkness.

  2. 02

Day 2: Wagah Border and Gobindgarh Fort

Drive to Wagah Border early to witness the border ceremony (afternoon shows are less crowded, but arrive at least 1–2 hours early to clear security). On the return journey, stop at Gobindgarh Fort, a restored 18th-century fort within the city. Tour the cannon and museum displays. Have an early dinner back in the city and rest.

  3. 03

Day 3: Bazaars, Durgiana Temple and local food

Spend the morning exploring Chhota Bazaar or Hall Bazaar for textiles, bangles, wooden items and handicrafts; haggle gently in small shops. Visit Durgiana Temple (a major Hindu shrine with a pool similar to the Golden Temple) and tour it. Have lunch at a well-known dhaba such as Kanha Sweets or Crystal. In the afternoon, hire a car and visit Ram Bagh or Khalsa College to see colonial-era architecture, or, if you have energy, take a half-day trip to Tarn Taran Sahib (35 km south) to see a large gurudwara and village life. Return and enjoy a final evening walk and meal in the old city.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • The Golden Temple is level and accessible, but crowds are intense, especially mornings and weekends. Go very early or on a weekday, and ask temple staff to help you find less-crowded entry points if you are less mobile.
  • Plan one major sight per day and rest indoors during 1–4 p.m. when heat is strongest. Amritsar summers are tiring even for younger travellers.
  • Hire a car and driver for Wagah Border and other day trips rather than relying on shared transport or autos. It gives you control over pace and a cool space to rest.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes (remove them at the temple) and socks or very light footwear. Marble can be extremely hot underfoot in summer.
  • Stay in Civil Lines or Lawrence Road rather than the crowded old city if possible. These areas are quieter and have better hospital access.
  • The langar at the Golden Temple is the must-do meal. Sit on the floor or ask staff if chairs are available; eating here is inclusive and a core Amritsar experience.
